Chapter 7 - The Truth

Silence fell over the foyer, heavy and suffocating.

I stepped forward, my heels clicking softly against the marble floor. My body felt numb, as if I were watching a play from a great distance.

"Hello, Evelyn," I said, my voice surprisingly steady.

Evelyn looked between Adrian and me, her expression shifting rapidly from terror to confusion, and then to a rising, bitter disbelief.

"Why are you dressed like that?" Evelyn demanded, taking a step toward me. "Why are you in Adrian's house?"

"She lives here," Adrian said coldly, stepping into her path, blocking her from getting closer to me. "She is my wife."

Evelyn laughed. It was a high, frantic, hysterical sound that echoed off the high ceiling.

"Your wife?" she shrieked. "What kind of sick joke is this? Adrian, she's my sister! She's a boring, thirty-year-old hospital doctor! Did you hire her to play house while I was gone?"

"We were married six months ago, Evelyn," I said calmly, standing my ground. "On the day you climbed out the bathroom window and left our family to face forty million dollars in debt."

"I was running for my life!" Evelyn screamed, her voice echoing through the vast house. She grabbed Adrian's sleeve, her fingers digging into his suit coat. "Adrian, listen to me! Julian Vance forced me to leave!"

Adrian snapped his arm back, tearing his sleeve from her grip. "Julian Vance?"

Julian Vance was the thirty-five-year-old son of Richard Vance—the former executive who had attempted to siphon funds from Vale Subsidiary Holdings before fleeing to Europe three years ago.

"Julian came to my room at five in the morning on the day of the wedding," Evelyn stammered, her eyes darting around the room frantically. "He said he had proof that father was involved in the offshore embezzlement scheme! He said if I married you, he would release the documents to the Department of Justice and put father in prison for life!"

I stared at my sister. The story was dramatic, chaotic, and completely consistent with Evelyn's lifelong tendency to frame her own poor choices as tragic heroism.

"So you ran away with Julian Vance?" Adrian asked, his voice chillingly soft.

"He took me to his villa in Sintra!" Evelyn cried. "He kept me locked in a house for six months! He took my phone, my passport, my money! I barely escaped two days ago... I caught a cargo flight to Boston and used my last cash to take a taxi here!"

She reached out again, her hands trembling as she tried to touch Adrian's face.

"I came back for you, Adrian," she sobbed. "I came back to save our family. You have to forgive me... you have to help me annul whatever ridiculous fake marriage you made with Claire and help me put Julian in prison!"

Adrian looked down at her face, then slowly turned his head to look at me.

His gray eyes were totally unreadable.

"Claire," Adrian said quietly. "Call Samuel. Tell him to bring the legal security team to Crestview immediately."

"Adrian, no!" Evelyn begged. "No lawyers! If Julian finds out I'm here—"

"Julian Vance was arrested at London Heathrow six hours ago by Interpol," Adrian interrupted smoothly, his voice dropping like an iron anvil.

Evelyn froze. Her sob caught in her throat.

"What?" she whispered.
