Chapter 10 - KING OF MY HEART

The wedding reception was a magnificent affair that lasted late into the evening.

Music filled the grand ballroom overlooking Lake Michigan as guests danced, toasted, and celebrated Elena and Thomas’s new journey.

Toward midnight, after Sophie had been tucked safely into a crib in a private VIP room upstairs under Vance’s watchful eye, Ethan led me out onto the quiet, stone balcony overlooking the moonlit water.

The cool night air brushed against my skin, but I felt completely warm standing beside Ethan.

He stood behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling my back against his broad chest. I leaned my head back against his shoulder, watching the moonlight dance across the dark waves.

“What are you thinking about?” Ethan whispered into my ear, his breath warm against my skin.

“I was thinking about how terrified I was forty-eight hours ago,” I confessed softly. “I was alone, exhausted, broke, and my baby wouldn't stop crying. I thought my life was falling apart.”

Ethan turned me around gently in his arms so I was facing him.

“You were never alone, Rachel,” he said, his voice deep and resonant. “You were just waiting for me to find you.”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.

My heart stopped in my chest. “Ethan...”

He opened the box, revealing a stunning platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless diamond that sparkled under the moonlight.

“I know this has moved fast,” Ethan said, looking directly into my eyes with absolute sincerity and fierce devotion. “I know who I am, and I know the dark world I inhabit. But I promise you, Rachel, on my life, that no harm will ever touch you or Sophie. I will give you the world. I will protect you with everything I have.”

He picked up the delicate ring, holding it between his large, scarred fingers.

“Stay in Chicago with me, Rachel,” he begged softly, a rare vulnerability touching his handsome face. “Be my queen.”

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness overflowed from my eyes, spilling down my cheeks.

I raised my hand, placing my palm gently against his cheek.

“Yes,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “Yes, Ethan. I’ll stay with you.”

Ethan let out a soft, ragged breath of relief. He slid the ring onto my finger—a perfect fit—before cupping my face in his broad hands and bringing his lips down onto mine.

The kiss was deep, passionate, and filled with a lifetime of promises.

Far below us, the city of Chicago stretched out into the night—a vast, powerful kingdom ruled by the man holding me in his arms.

But as I wrapped my arms around his neck, feeling his powerful heart beating steadily against mine, I knew the truth.
