Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Richard Veale did not sit down. Instead, his face flushed a deep, dangerous purple, the veins on his neck bulging against his stiff white collar.

"This is absurd!" Richard bellowed, slamming his palm onto the end of the mahogany table. "Owen, get your daughter out of this room immediately! I don't know what kind of childish play-acting this is, but I am dealing with the managing partners of Reed Capital, not a thirty-year-old nobody with a haircut!"

Arthur Vance stepped forward quietly, opening his leather folio and sliding three thick legal documents across the smooth surface of the table until they rested directly in front of Richard.

"Mr. Veale," Arthur said dryly. "Ms. Tinsley Reed is the Founder, Chairman, and ninety-eight percent equity owner of Reed Capital Partners LLC. She holds sole investment authority over Vehicle IV, which currently holds four hundred and twelve million dollars of your company's senior debt, as well as the twelve million dollar mezzanine facility for Reed Manufacturing. She is the principal. There is no one above her."

Dean looked like he was going to vomit. He stared at me, his eyes wide with a horrific combination of realization and sheer terror.

"You..." Dean stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "You owned the firm? Last night... at the party... you were the owner?"

"Last night at the party," I said, leaning forward slightly and placing my elbows on the table, "you asked me if I had run into a lawnmower. You told my father that if I worked at Veale Holdings, you would have my security clearance revoked by morning."

I looked at him with an icy detachment that seemed to cut the temperature in the room in half.

"You don't have to worry about my security clearance, Dean," I added quietly. "Because as of eight o'clock this morning, you don't have a job at Veale Holdings."

"Tinsley... please," Owen choked out, stepping around Richard Veale and coming closer to the table, his hands trembling violently. "Tinsley, sweetie... why didn't you tell us? Why didn't you tell me you owned all this? I'm your father!"

I turned my eyes to Owen. The sight of him—this man who had allowed his second wife to hack off my hair in a bathroom fifteen hours ago, who had accused me of having an "episode" to protect his business deal—made something hard and final seal shut inside my chest.

"You never asked, Dad," I said. "For seven years, whenever I came to Greenwich, you asked me if I had found a husband yet. You asked me if I was still earning ninety thousand dollars reviewing spreadsheets. You told me to be quiet so Lark could speak about her flower arrangements. You didn't care what I did, as long as I didn't make your new family uncomfortable."

"Tinsley, I was trying to protect you!" Owen cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. "I didn't know!"

"You didn't care to know," I corrected him flatly. "And last night, when your wife cut my hair with sewing scissors to make sure I looked ugly for your rich guests, you told me I was making a scene and sent me to the guesthouse so I wouldn't ruin your six million dollar check."

Richard Veale turned his head sharply to look at Owen, his eyes blazing with fury. "Your wife did what?"

"It doesn't matter what she did!" Owen shouted, turning frantically on Richard. "Richard, tell her! Tell her we can work this out! We are joining our families!"

"There will be no joining of families," I said, my voice cutting through their desperate bickering like a razor.

I tapped a key on my laptop. A large high-definition monitor mounted on the boardroom wall flickered to life, displaying a real-time financial schematic of Veale Industrial's cross-collateralized liabilities.

"Richard," I said, pointing to the red numbers glowing on the screen. "At nine o'clock, your primary revolving credit facility defaults. Under Section 8.2 of the Delaware debt agreement, Reed Capital will seize the collateral shares of your subsidiary, Stamford Assembly Corp. We will also execute a immediate freezing order on your family's personal offshore accounts in Jersey, which were pledged as personal guarantees for the 2024 expansion bond."

Richard’s strength seemed to leave him all at once. He sank into one of the leather boardroom chairs, his heavy shoulders slumping, his face draining of all its ruddy color.

"You're destroying us," Richard whispered, staring at the screen in horror. "For what? Because my son made a joke about your hair?"

"No," I said softly. "Not because he made a joke. Because your family and my father built your entire lives on the assumption that you could crush people who were quiet, and that no one would ever hold you accountable. You thought power was something you inherited at a golf club in Greenwich. I built mine from scratch."

I looked at Dean, who was leaning against the table for support, his forehead covered in cold sweat.

"As for your six million dollar equity investment in Reed Manufacturing, Richard," I continued, "that offer is void. Reed Capital is accelerating the twelve million dollar loan to my father's company immediately. Apex Capital will take full control of Reed Manufacturing by noon today."

"Tinsley, no!" Owen dropped to his knees right beside the conference table, his dignity completely shattered, tears streaming down his flushed face. "Please! That company was my father's! It's my entire life! You can't take it from me!"

"I am not taking it from the workers, Dad," I said, looking down at him without a shred of pity. "The Stamford plant will remain open. Every worker will keep their job, their pensions, and their healthcare. But you will step down as CEO by twelve o’clock. You will surrender all equity shares to Reed Capital, and you will vacate the corporate offices in Greenwich by five PM today."

May you like

"And Fay?" Owen wept, holding his hands up in a desperate plea. "What about our home? What about Lark’s wedding?"

"Fay can keep her sewing scissors," I said coldly. "And as for the house... the Greenwich estate was put up as secondary collateral for your mezzanine debt eighteen months ago. Reed Capital will be taking possession of the property on Friday morning. I suggest you tell your wife to start packing her bags today."
