Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Bond

One year later.
The historic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in downtown Charleston was filled to absolute capacity. Over five hundred guests filled the dark mahogany pews—city officials, maritime leaders, union dockworkers, and international shipping executives, all dressed in formal black-tie attire.
The interior of the cathedral was decorated with hundreds of white roses and flickering candles, casting a warm, golden glow over the high vaulted stone arches.
At the altar stood Grant Callahan.
He was immaculate in a black velvet tuxedo, his posture commanding, his dark eyes fixed on the heavy oak doors at the back of the church. Beside him stood Jack Mercer as best man, looking sharp and proud.
Beside the altar, sitting quietly on a custom velvet rug, was Titan. The massive Cane Corso wore a black silk collar adorned with a white orchid. He was completely calm, his dark eyes scanning the crowd with dignified authority.
The grand organ erupted into a deep, majestic processional hymn.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Emily Carter walked down the long marble aisle on the arm of her father, Arthur.
She was breathtaking. Her wedding dress was a stunning gown of French lace and silk, with a sweeping train that trailed gracefully behind her. Her light brown hair was styled in soft waves adorned with pearls, and her face radiated a quiet, luminous joy that captivated everyone in the cathedral.
Arthur walked with a steady, proud step, his hand resting securely over his daughter's wrist, guiding her toward the man who had saved their family.
When they reached the altar, Arthur took Emily’s hand, placed it carefully into Grant’s broad palm, and gave Grant a firm, emotional nod.
"Take care of my girl, Grant," Arthur said softly.
"With my life, Arthur," Grant replied, his voice thick with rare emotion.
Grant turned to Emily, taking both of her hands in his. He looked down into her eyes, his intense gaze softening into pure, unshielded adoration.
The archbishop stepped forward, his voice echoing through the sacred hall. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony..."
As the traditional vows were spoken, Grant looked into Emily’s eyes, his voice steady, deep, and echoing with profound conviction.
"Emily," Grant spoke, his fingers squeezing hers tightly. "I lived in a world of violence, shadows, and mistrust. I believed that power was the only thing that could keep a man safe. Then you walked into my home, sat on a bloody floor, and showed me that true strength isn't built on fear—it is built on courage, grace, and love. You saved my life, you healed my home, and you gave me a future. I promise to protect you, honor you, and stand by your side through every storm, for as long as I live."
Tears glistened in Emily’s eyes as she looked up at the man who had transformed her life.
"Grant," Emily spoke, her voice clear and filled with absolute love. "I walked into your world broken, exhausted, and losing hope. You gave my father his dignity back, you gave me a home where I am loved, and you showed me the fiercely loyal heart beneath the armor you wear for the world. I promise to be your anchor, your strength, and your partner in all things, through darkness and light, forever."
"By the authority vested in me," the archbishop declared, smiling warmly at the couple. "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Grant did not hesitate. He pulled Emily gently into his arms, wrapping his hand around her waist, and kissed her with a deep, passionate intensity that brought a thunderous ovation from the five hundred guests filling the cathedral.
Titan stood up, raised his broad head, and let out a joyful, booming bark that echoed through the high stone vaults, making the entire congregation laugh and applaud.
Hand in hand, Grant and Emily turned to face the crowd as husband and wife.

As they walked down the aisle together, escorted by Titan trotting proudly beside them, Emily looked out at the bright sunlight streaming through the stained-glass doors ahead.
She had entered Grant Callahan’s world as a broke, desperate nurse walking into a war zone. She walked out of it as the cherished queen of an unbroken empire—forever protected, fiercely loved, and bound by a love that no force on earth could ever tear apart.
