Chapter 5 - The Cracks in the Facade

The explosion didn't happen in public. It happened in the quiet, desperate realization of a budget that didn't add up.

By late October, Emily’s wedding expenses had spiraled completely out of control.

The downtown San Francisco hotel had added a twenty-four percent mandatory service charge, a four-thousand-dollar audio-visual equipment fee, and a mandatory minimum spend of fifteen thousand dollars on their house liquor package—which consisted of low-grade, mass-market wines that tasted like vinegar.

Inside her two-bedroom apartment in South San Francisco, Emily sat surrounded by unpaid vendor invoices, screaming into her phone at her fiancé, Julian.

"What do you mean your parents aren't covering the rehearsal dinner?!" Emily shrieked, her face pale with rage.

"They already gave us twenty thousand, Emily!" Julian yelled back, pulling at his tie as he stood in their narrow hallway. "The wedding is costing sixty thousand dollars for forty-eight people! It’s insane! My friends are complaining that they have to pay seventy dollars for valet parking at the venue!"

"It has to be perfect!" Emily sobbed, throwing a swatch of silk fabric at the wall. "Everyone on Instagram is watching this! If we don't have the champagne tower and the custom lighting, it looks cheap!"

Her phone chimed on the table.

A text from Aunt Sarah:

Aunt Sarah: Emily, sweetie! So sorry, but David and I won't be able to make it to the San Francisco ceremony on the 12th. Your grandmother really needs us up in Sonoma for her Harvest gathering, and with the hotel parking costs being so high, we decided it's best if we stay close to her. Sending you so much love! ❤️

Emily stared at the screen, her eyes wide with confusion. "Harvest gathering? What is she talking about?"

Ten seconds later, another text chimed.

Cousin Mark: Hey Em, heading to Sonoma for Grandma's thing on the 12th. Have a great wedding day down in the city!

Then another.

Uncle David: Regrets for the 12th, Emily. Grandma’s health comes first. Best of luck with Julian.

"What is happening?!" Emily screamed, her voice cracking as she grabbed her phone and dialed our mother.

Mom answered on the first ring, sounding completely frantic. "Emily! Have you checked your email?! Your uncle Frank just canceled his flight to San Francisco! He said he’s flying into Oakland instead and taking a private shuttle straight up to Sonoma!"

"What is up in Sonoma?!" Emily shrieked, her knuckles turning white around the phone. "Why is everyone talking about Grandma?!"

"It’s Chloe," Mom whispered, her tone laced with absolute terror. "Chloe sent engraved invitations to the entire family. She’s hosting a luxury weekend at her vineyard on your wedding day... and Eleanor signed the letter."
