Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Estate

The first two weeks at the Costa Estate were a strange mixture of luxury and quiet tension.
Rebecca’s room was larger than her entire previous apartment, complete with a private balcony, a feather bed, and a private bath. Her responsibilities were simple: accompany Clara on her morning walks through the gardens, ensure she took her cardiac medication on time, read the daily newspapers to her, and keep her company during meals.
Clara flourished. For the first time in months, she was smiling, telling stories about her youth in Italy, and walking through the rose gardens without feeling suffocated by armed guards. Rebecca learned to navigate Clara’s sudden moments of memory loss with patience, gently redirecting her conversations whenever Clara became confused about the year or her late husband.
But Rebecca quickly realized that the Costa family was not a normal business empire.
Men in dark suits arrived at all hours of the night. Heavy black SUVs sat idling in the courtyard. Roman was rarely home during the day, but at night, Rebecca could hear his low, authoritative voice echoing from his basement office long after midnight.
One evening, around eleven o'clock, Rebecca walked down to the main kitchen to fetch a glass of warm milk for Clara, who was having trouble sleeping.
As she crossed the dark central hallway, she heard raised voices coming from Roman’s study. The door was slightly ajar, casting a warm streak of yellow light across the dark wood floor.
“The Marcone family is pushing into the river docks, Roman,” a voice snapped inside—it was Marco, Roman’s chief lieutenant. “They know your mother’s health is declining. They think you’re distracted.”
“Let them think whatever they want,” Roman’s voice was lethal, cold, and utterly calm. “If Marcone sets foot on Pier 14, sink his boats. All of them.”
“And the girl? The waitress?” Marco asked. “She’s wandering around the estate. She sees things.”
“She sees what I allow her to see,” Roman replied sharply. “She keeps my mother safe. If anyone touches her, or if anyone uses her to get to my mother, I will personally flay them alive. Is that clear?”

Rebecca held her breath, her hand frozen on the stair railing, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She stepped backward slowly into the shadows, realizing for the first time the true scale of the dangerous world she had stepped into.
