Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Shield

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the crimson peaks of the Green Mountains, setting the sky ablaze with shades of purple, gold, and magenta, we sat around a roaring stone fire pit on the outdoor terrace.
The golden retriever lay sleeping soundly at Lila’s feet, exhausted from a long day of running through the fallen autumn leaves. Lila was sitting on a plush wool blanket between Lucas and Gabriel, happily listening to Lucas read her a bedtime story about a brave princess who built her own castle in the woods.
Julian and Ethan were sitting by the outdoor grill, laughing over stories from their college days, while Nathan sat beside me, sipping a glass of vintage red wine from a small local Vermont vineyard.
My phone on the side table gave a quiet, soft chime.
I picked it up and opened the news notification screen.
An article from the Boston Herald appeared:
[LEGAL UPDATE]: FORMER EXECUTIVES GRANT ASHFORD AND CELESTE VALE BEGIN FEDERAL PRISON SENTENCES FOLLOWING FINAL PLEA DENIAL.
The article detailed how Grant had been transferred to a medium-security federal facility to begin his twelve-year sentence, his appeals completely exhausted, his corporate assets reduced to zero. His mother, Vivian, was living in total obscurity, barred by court order from ever making public statements regarding my family or my daughter.
I stared at the black-and-white mugshot on the screen for three seconds—a face that used to strike terror into my heart, a face that used to dictate my every breath, my every word, my every choice.
Now, it looked small. Pathetic. Powerless.
I pressed the delete button, erasing the news app from my phone entirely.
"Everything alright, Claire?" Nathan asked softly, noticing my movement.
I turned my head, setting the phone face down on the wooden table, and looked at my five brothers sitting around the fire.
I looked at Nathan, who had used the power of the law to crush a corrupt dynasty.
I looked at Ethan, who had used his physical strength to shield me from danger.
I looked at Lucas, who had healed my broken body with surgical care.
I looked at Julian, who had stripped my abusers of every dollar they possessed.
And I looked at Gabriel, who had turned the darkness of their secrets into the light of absolute truth.
Five men who had stood between me and the world, five brothers who had proven that true family is an unbreakable shield that no power, no money, and no violence can ever shatter.
"Everything is perfect, Nathan," I said, reaching out to take his hand, feeling the warm, steady pulse of my family standing beside me.
I pulled my blanket closer around my shoulders, listened to the laughter of my daughter playing by the fire, and looked up at the infinite, starry night sky above Vermont.
The darkness was gone.

The fear was dead.
And my life—true, beautiful, and unshakeable—had finally begun.
