Chapter 10 - The Unlocked Door

The third-floor suite was bathed in the warm, golden light of the morning sun.

The heavy steel door stood wide open, no longer a barrier, no longer a secret vault. The mechanical hiss of the ventilator had ceased, replaced by the soft, natural sound of breathing.

Julian stood by the side of the hospital bed, holding his wife’s hand.

Sophia Vance was awake. She was weak, her voice barely a whisper, but her dark blue eyes were clear, focused, and filled with tears as she looked up at her husband.

“Julian...” Sophia whispered raspy, her fingers twitching against his broad palm.

“I’m here, my love,” Julian said, his voice cracking with an emotion he had kept buried under ice for three long years. He leaned down, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against her forehead. “I’m right here.”

Lena stood in the doorway, holding Grace’s hand.

The little girl stared at the woman in the bed, her wide grey eyes filled with a quiet, miraculous wonder.

“Go on, sweetheart,” Lena encouraged softly, giving Grace’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Go see your mother.”

Grace stepped forward, walking slowly across the room. She stopped beside the bed, looking up at the woman whose face she had only known from oil paintings and faded memories.

Sophia looked down at her daughter, tears slipping down her pale cheeks. “Grace... my beautiful little girl...”

Grace reached out her small hand, touching Sophia’s arm gently. “You woke up,” the child whispered softly. “Papa said you would.”

Sophia pulled her daughter close, wrapping her frail arms around the child, weeping quietly as three years of separation dissolved in the warm morning air.

Julian looked up from his family, his eyes finding Lena standing by the door. He gave her a silent, profound nod of gratitude—a quiet acknowledgment of the girl from Dorchester who had walked into their nightmare and helped bring them back to life.

Lena smiled warmly, bowing her head slightly, before stepping back into the hallway to give the family their privacy.

She walked down the long, sunlit corridor toward the grand balcony overlooking the grounds.

The harbor stretched out before her, blue, vast, and endless under the clear summer sky. The storm had passed, leaving behind a clean, fresh world full of promise.

Her phone, which Roman had returned to her ten minutes ago, vibrated in her pocket.

She pulled it out and opened a text from Tasha: GIRL ARE YOU ALIVE??? THE FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS JUST HIT MY BANK ACCOUNT WTH IS GOING ON???

Lena let out a bright, clear laugh that echoed across the stone terrace.

She typed a quick reply: I’m safe, Tash. In fact, I think I just got a new job. I’ll explain everything over pancakes tomorrow.

May you like

She slipped the phone back into her pocket and leaned against the stone railing, taking a deep breath of the cool ocean air.

For the first time in twenty years, Lena Brooks wasn't running. She wasn't hiding. She was standing in the light, ready for whatever the horizon had to offer.
