Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

As Adrian and Evelyn reached the floor of the ballroom, a swarm of photographers rushed forward, flashbulbs exploding in a blinding rhythm.
Adrian kept a protective hand at the small of Evelyn's back, guiding her smoothly through the crowd, completely ignoring Beatrice's furious glare from across the room.
Before they could reach the stage, Richard Marlow pushed his way through the crowd, flanked by Julianna and Eleanor.
"Evelyn!" Richard bellowed, forcing an awkward, unconvincing smile onto his face as he stepped into their path. "What is the meaning of this? You didn't tell us you were attending tonight!"
Evelyn stopped, meeting her stepfather's gaze with absolute composure. "Good evening, Richard. I didn't realize I needed to report my calendar to you."
"Evelyn, don't be rude to your father!" Eleanor hissed, eyeing the emerald gown with burning envy. "Where on earth did you get that dress? Did you steal money from the library fund?"
"Careful, Mrs. Marlow," Adrian’s voice cut in, cold and lethal as steel. "You are speaking to the future Executive Director of the Wexler Community Endowment. I suggest you measure your words carefully before a dozen reporters."
Richard’s face went pale. "Executive Director? Adrian... Mr. Wexler... there must be some misunderstanding! Evelyn is an accountant at a shipping yard! She knows nothing about high-level foundation management!"
"She built a financial model for community literacy that outperforms eighty percent of the proposals submitted to my board this year," Adrian replied smoothly. "Which is far more than I can say for your development proposal, Mr. Marlow."
Julianna stepped forward, her teeth clenched. "Adrian, you're being played! She's using you to get back at us because she's jealous of my family! Ask her about her scar—ask her how she really got it! She's nothing but a disaster!"
The surrounding guests gasped at Julianna's crass explosion.
Evelyn didn't back away. She took a step toward Julianna, her voice quiet, clear, and ringing out for everyone nearby to hear.
"I got this scar when I was twelve years old, Julianna," Evelyn said, her eyes calm and unwavering. "I was pulling your prized pet out of a burning shed while you and your mother stood on the lawn worrying about your shoes. I have never been ashamed of this mark. But tonight... I think you should be ashamed of yours."

A murmur of approval rippled through the surrounding onlookers. Julianna turned scarlet, unable to find a single word of rebuttal, while Eleanor looked as though she wished the floor would swallow her whole.
"Now, if you'll excuse us," Adrian said, stepping past the stunned Marlow family, "we have a presentation to make."
