Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Water

That evening, Declan took Gemma out on his private yacht, The Red Sovereign, cruising slowly along the peaceful, dark waters of Lake Michigan.

The skyline of Chicago stretched out beside them like a sparkling mountain of diamond and gold lights, reflecting off the calm, dark waves. The air was crisp, but the yacht’s aft deck was warmed by hidden radiant heaters and furnished with plush leather sofas.

Gemma stood at the brass railing, wrapped in a heavy white cashmere coat, holding a crystal glass of expensive champagne.

Declan stepped out from the main cabin, wearing a dark wool overcoat. He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair mixed with the cool lake air.

“Cold?” he asked softly against her ear.

Gemma smiled, leaning back against his broad chest, placing her hand over his. “Not anymore. I don't think I’ll ever be cold again when I’m with you.”

Declan tightened his grip around her, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle over his soul. The city behind them was still dangerous, still filled with rivalries, threats, and endless ambitions, but out here on the open water, beneath the vast canopy of stars, they were invincible.

“Gemma,” Declan said quietly.

“Hmm?”

“I bought a property last week,” he said casually, his voice light.

Gemma turned slightly in his arms, her eyebrow arching with suspicion. “What kind of property? Another counting house? A freight terminal?”

Declan chuckled, shaking his head. “No. A villa. On Lake Como, in Italy.”

Gemma went quiet, her hazel eyes widening slightly in surprise. “Lake Como?”

“Fourteen acres of olive groves, a private dock, a historic stone house overlooking the mountains,” Declan described softly, looking into her eyes. “It’s far away from Chicago. Far away from ledgers, territorial disputes, and encrypted phones.”

Gemma stared at him, her heart beating fast. “Declan... are you saying...”

“I’m saying that the syndicate is fully modernized now,” Declan explained, reaching into his coat pocket. “Marcus can handle the local enforcement. Your automated security systems manage the offshore accounts seamlessly. We don't need to stay in the mud every day of our lives.”

He pulled a small, black velvet box from his pocket and opened it beneath the soft amber deck lights.

Inside rested a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, set in a band of polished platinum—simple, breathtaking, and impossibly brilliant.

Declan looked into her eyes, his voice steady, deep, and filled with a raw, boundless devotion.

“I gave eleven years of my life to building an empire out of blood and steel,” Declan said softly. “I want to give the rest of my life to you. Build a home with me, Gemma. Be my wife.”

Gemma looked down at the brilliant diamond ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had torn through Gary, Indiana, to avenge her, who had held her while she screamed in pain, who had handed her his entire empire without a second thought.

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over her lashes, sparkling like diamonds in the amber light.

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice breaking with beautiful emotion. “Yes, Declan! A thousand times yes!”

Declan let out a long, ecstatic breath. He pulled the ring from the box, sliding it smoothly onto the ring finger of her left hand—a perfect fit.

He picked her up in his arms, laughing aloud as he spun her around on the open deck of the yacht, their laughter echoing out over the dark, peaceful waters of Lake Michigan.

He set her down, cupping her face in his hands, kissing her with every shred of passion, love, and protection he possessed in his soul.
