Chapter 10 - The Master Key

Three months later, the annual Carbone Strategic Holdings Gala was held at the grand oceanfront resort on South Beach.

The ballroom was filled with five hundred of Florida’s most prominent figures—politicians, shipping magnates, international investors, and journalists. High chandeliers cast golden light over long tables decorated with white orchids and crystal stemware.

Iris stood on the private terrace overlooking the dark, moonlit Atlantic Ocean, holding a glass of sparkling water in her left hand.

She wore an elegant, floor-length emerald green silk gown that draped beautifully over her frame, her dark hair styled in soft waves over one shoulder. Her right palm bore a faint, thin white scar—a clean line running from the base of her index finger down toward her wrist—the only remaining mark of that dark Tuesday morning in September.

A broad hand rested gently on her waist from behind.

Roman stepped onto the terrace, looking dashing in a black tuxedo and bow tie. He leaned down, pressing a soft kiss against her neck.

"You're avoiding the mayor," Roman murmured, a subtle gleam of humor in his dark eyes.

"He wants to talk about port tax exemptions," Iris smiled, turning in his arms to face him. "I told him he needs to submit a three-year revenue projection to my office before I'll even look at his proposal."

Roman laughed softly, his hands resting comfortably on her hips. "You're terrifying the city council, Iris. I love it."

"I learned from the best," she replied, reaching up to adjust his black bow tie.

From inside the ballroom, the sound of glass chimes echoed as Geno tapped a spoon against his champagne glass, announcing the evening's main toast.

"Looks like they're waiting for the boss," Iris said, sparkling hazel eyes looking into his.

Roman looked down at her, his face filled with an expression of profound, quiet contentment that few people in the world had ever been privileged to see.

He reached into his tuxedo pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box.

Iris froze, her heart missing a beat. "Roman?"

Roman opened the box.

Inside lay a custom-designed platinum ring—a brilliant, emerald-cut diamond flanked by two small, deep-blue sapphires, set upon a band carved with delicate, microscopic lines reminiscent of a high-tech circuit board.

"Four months ago, someone tried to steal your access key," Roman said, his deep voice thick with quiet, intense emotion. "They wanted the key to my company, my ships, and my money."

He lifted the ring from the velvet box, holding it between his broad fingers.

"They didn't understand," Roman whispered, looking directly into her eyes. "You were always the only key that mattered to me, Iris. You opened the only door in my life that was ever worth going through."

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness glistened in Iris's eyes, reflecting the golden light from the ballroom windows behind them.

"Roman..." she breathed, her voice trembling.

"Marry me, Iris," Roman said, holding her hand gently in his. "Build this life with me."

Iris looked at the man who had protected her in the dark, who had fought for her honor, and who had given her a place where she could stand tall without fear.

"Yes," Iris whispered, her face lighting up with a breathtaking smile that outshone every light on the coast. "Yes, Roman. Always."

Roman slid the platinum ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly—a clean, flawless match.

He pulled her into his arms, dipping his head to kiss her deeply as the ocean breeze swept over the terrace, carrying the cool scent of salt and the sound of distant waves.

Behind them, the ballroom burst into warm applause as Geno and the rest of the guests looked out through the glass doors, raising their glasses to the man who had conquered the city, and the woman who had conquered his heart.
