Chapter 9 - The Safe Harbor

The sun was just beginning to break over the eastern ridge, painting the dark waters of the river in shades of bruised purple and pale gold.
The Iron Fortress was silent. The remaining guards had either fled into the tree line or been disarmed and secured by Dominic’s strike team. The grand villa stood scarred and quiet against the morning mist.
In the courtyard, beside the ruined entrance gates, Dominic stood leaning against the fender of his black SUV, watching the river flow past below.
Footsteps crunched on the gravel behind him.
Elena walked over, stopping a few feet away. She was wearing a heavy wool coat borrowed from one of Dominic’s guards, her hair tied back simply, her bruised face stark against the morning light.
“Aris is waiting in the medical suite back at the townhouse,” Dominic said without turning around. “He wants to do a follow-up scan on your ribs.”
“Aris is a good doctor,” Elena said quietly, leaning against the vehicle beside him. “Better than I deserved after walking into this city with a target on my back.”
Dominic turned his head, looking down at her. “You didn't walk into a target, Elena. You were hunted from the moment your uncle died.”
“What happens now?” she asked, looking out across the wide expanse of the river where a police patrol boat could be seen idling a mile downstream, hesitant to approach property controlled by the Ashford syndicate. “The Helian Board knows I have the encrypted portfolio. Even if Caldwell is gone, they’ll send someone else.”
Dominic reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the small microSD card that Marco had successfully recovered from the technical lab during the chaos of the breach, and held it out toward her on his open palm.
“They won't send anyone,” Dominic said. “Not after what I’m going to send them today.”
Elena looked down at the tiny black chip, then up into his grey eyes. “What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to publish the entire encrypted ledger to every international regulatory body, federal law enforcement agency, and financial audit board in North America and Europe,” Dominic stated calmly. “Every shell company, every bribe, every illegal weapons shipment, every offshore account belonging to the Helian Group will be public knowledge by noon.”
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. “That... that will destroy the entire syndicate. It will tear down my family’s legacy.”
“Your family’s legacy was built on blood and extortion, Elena,” Dominic said gently, his voice carrying an undeniable ring of truth. “It’s time it was burned to the ground so something cleaner can take its place.”
She stared at him for a long, silent moment, the morning wind blowing a dark lock of hair across her face. Then, slowly, a genuine, unburdened smile touched her lips.
“You really don't care about playing by the rules, do you, Mr. Ashford?”
“Rules are for men who don't own the board,” Dominic replied, a faint ghost of a smile appearing at the corner of his mouth.
He opened the rear door of the SUV, stepping aside to let her enter.
“Come on. Let’s take you home.”
Elena paused with her hand on the door frame, looking back at him. “Whose home, Dominic?”
May you like
Dominic met her gaze, his grey eyes steady, deep, and unwavering.
“Yours. For as long as you want to stay.”
