Chapter 4 - The Currency of Secrets

By two o'clock in the morning, the Chestnut Hill estate was bathed in shadow.

Beside Claire in the grand king-sized bed, Vincent slept deeply, his breathing heavy and rhythmic. Even in sleep, his right arm rested across the space between them—a possessive weight that felt less like protection now and more like a heavy iron bar.

Claire carefully lifted his arm, slipped out from beneath the silk sheets, and stood up in the cool air of the bedroom.

She put on a dark velvet robe, picked up her phone, and walked silently down the carpeted hallway to her private sitting room at the end of the north wing.

She unlocked a hidden drawer in her writing desk, pulled out one of the satellite phones she had brought from the warehouse vault, and powered it on.

The encrypted device chimed softly, connecting to a secure relay network Margaret Bennett had established thirty years ago.

Claire dialed an unlisted number from memory.

The line rang four times before a voice answered—sharp, precise, and alert despite the hour.

"Bennett Line," said the voice of Daniel Pierce.

"Daniel," Claire whispered into the receiver. "I need you to activate the old transport protocol."

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Daniel had spent twenty years handling Margaret Bennett's off-the-books logistics. He knew instantly what "transport protocol" meant.

"Are we moving assets, Mrs. Moretti?" he asked quietly.

"We are moving me," Claire said. "And I need three separate offshore accounts converted to physical bearer bonds by four o'clock tomorrow afternoon."

"Does Vincent's security team have access to those accounts?"

"No. They are registered under the Bennett Coastal trust umbrella. Vincent doesn't even know they exist."

"Understood," Daniel said. "What about the house security? Vincent's perimeter guards sweep the estate grounds every forty-five minutes."

"I have the master override codes for the north gate," Claire said. "My grandmother helped install the original alarm grid when the property was built in the nineties. Vincent updated the cameras, but he never changed the hardwired subterranean sensors."

"Smart," Daniel noted. "Where do you want me to stage the vehicle?"

"At the old fish pier behind the warehouse. Tomorrow night during the council dinner."

"Mrs. Moretti... if Vincent realizes what you're doing, he will lock down every port from Boston to Portland. He won't let you walk away."

Claire looked down at her left hand—at the flawless four-carat emerald-cut diamond ring Vincent had placed on her finger five years ago in Venice.

"He won't know I'm gone until the treaty is signed," Claire said, her voice turning as cold as the sea air outside. "Because tomorrow night, I am going to give him exactly what he wants."

She hung up the phone, removed the SIM card, snapped it in half, and dropped the pieces into a small jar of corrosive chemical solvent she kept hidden in her desk.

She walked to the window and looked out at the dark expanse of the lawn.

She placed her hand over her abdomen. Eight weeks.

"Your father thinks power is built with guns, treaties, and gold pins," she whispered to the darkness. "He's about to learn that true power is knowing when to vanish."
