Chapter 7 - The Birth of an Heir

Two weeks later, at three o'clock on a freezing December morning, the tranquility of the Lake Forest estate was shattered by a sharp, sudden cry from the master bedroom.

“Adrian!”

Adrian bolted awake from a deep sleep, instantly throwing off the covers.

Claire was sitting up on the edge of the bed, her hands clutching her stomach, her face pale and shining with sweat.

“It’s time,” she gasped, a sharp contraction contorting her features. “Adrian... my water broke!”

Within ninety seconds, the estate’s medical wing was thrown into high gear. Dr. Mercer and two top obstetricians were in position, the medical lights turned on, sterile equipment laid out on stainless steel trays.

Adrian refused to leave her side.

He stood beside the delivery bed, wearing surgical scrubs, holding Claire’s hand in a grip so tight his knuckles were white.

“You’re doing great, carina,” Adrian urged, wiping the sweat from her forehead with a warm cloth. “Breathe. Just breathe with me.”

“It hurts, Adrian!” Claire cried out as another massive contraction ripped through her body. “It hurts so much!”

“I know, my love, I know,” Adrian said, his voice filled with an agonizing helplessness he had never felt before in his life. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”

For four intense, terrifying hours, Claire fought through the grueling labor. Through every contraction, through every wave of pain, Adrian held her, sang quiet Italian lullabies his grandmother had taught him, and whispered endless promises of love into her ear.

“He’s crowning!” Dr. Mercer announced, his hands ready. “One more big push, Claire! Give me everything you’ve got!”

Claire let out a fierce, primal scream, pouring every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted body into one final, heroic push.

At 7:12 AM, as the first golden rays of the winter sun broke over the snowy trees outside, a sharp, clear, loud cry filled the room.

A baby’s cry.

The room instantly went quiet, save for the triumphant, beautiful sound of new life.

Dr. Mercer smiled widely, holding up a healthy, squirming baby boy, covered in a white blanket.

“He’s here,” Mercer announced proudly. “Seven pounds, eight ounces. Perfect, healthy, and loud!”

Tears spilled freely down Adrian’s cheeks as Dr. Mercer laid the infant gently onto Claire’s chest.

Claire sobbed with pure relief, her shaking arms immediately wrapping around the small, warm body of her son. The baby’s dark, tiny head rested right against her heart, his dark blue eyes opening briefly to look up at his parents.

Adrian dropped to his knees beside the bed, burying his face near the baby’s head, his hand carefully wrapping around the infant’s tiny, perfect fingers. The baby’s small hand instinctively curled around Adrian’s thumb, holding on with surprising strength.

“He’s beautiful,” Claire whispered, her voice weak but brimming with love. “Look at him, Adrian. He has your hair. He has your hands.”

“He has your heart,” Adrian choked out, kissing his wife’s forehead, then kissing the tiny forehead of his newborn son.

“What are we going to name him?” Claire asked softly.

Adrian looked at his son, feeling a profound, life-altering shift inside his soul. The long line of Romano Dons—men defined by blood, violence, and vengeance—ended with him today. This child would represent something new. Something clean.

“Leo,” Adrian said softly. “Not for the Don who tried to kill me... but for Leone. The Lion. Because his mother fought like a lioness to bring him into this world.”

Claire smiled, tears shining in her eyes. “Leo Bennett Romano. It’s perfect.”
