Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece

One year later.

The spring morning over Lake Michigan was clear, bright, and golden.

Inside the grand ballroom of the Art Institute of Chicago, hundreds of high-society patrons, art critics, and city officials gathered for the unveiling of the museum's newly restored sixteenth-century Flemish tapestry project.

In the center of the room, standing before the massive, beautifully restored masterwork, stood Maeve Callahan Duca.

She wore a custom-tailored royal blue silk pantsuit, her dark hair pinned back with antique gold hairpins, looking radiant, powerful, and utterly confident.

Beside her stood Mateo, his hand gently resting against the small of her back, looking at her with an open, unshielded pride that everyone in the room could see.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the director of the Art Institute announced into the microphone, "this monumental restoration was made possible by Callahan Restoration and the Duca Heritage Foundation. Please give a round of applause to our lead master restorer, Maeve Duca!"

The room erupted into thunderous applause.

Maeve smiled, stepping forward to offer a brief, graceful nod to the crowd, before stepping back into the warm, secure embrace of her husband.

As the guests moved toward the champagne tables, Mateo leaned down, his lips brushing her ear.

"You did it, little bird," he murmured softly.

Maeve turned in his arms, resting her hands against his broad chest, looking up into those steel-gray eyes that had once terrified her in a rain-slicked alley, but now felt like her safest harbor in the world.

"We did it," she corrected softly.

Across the room, Maeve’s mother was happily showing off photos of the new studio expansion to a group of museum board members. Brandon Hayes was currently six months into a thirty-year sentence at ADX Florence, his appeals permanently exhausted. Gemma Rhodes had moved to Indiana, living a quiet, obscure life far away from Chicago's social scene.

Maeve reached up, her thumb gently tracing the line of Mateo’s jaw.

"Do you remember what you told me in the alley, Mateo?" she asked, a tiny, playful smirk touching her lips. "You said you wanted a wife who commands respect."

Mateo folded his large hands around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, his gray eyes shining with pure, unyielding devotion.

"I asked for a lioness, Maeve," Mateo said softly, kissing her deeply right in the center of the crowded museum, uncaring of who watched. "And I got the queen of Chicago."
