Chapter 6 - The Birth of Grace

The private delivery suite at Vance Medical Center was bathed in soft, warm light.
Classical piano music played quietly from high-end speakers, filling the room with a serene, comforting atmosphere. Outside, rain fell gently against the glass—not the harsh, freezing storm of that terrible night at the gala, but a soft, refreshing spring rain that smelled of new life.
For fourteen grueling hours, Elise fought through labor.
She did not fight alone.
Julian never left her side for a single second. He stayed right beside her bed, wearing blue hospital scrubs, holding her hand with unwavering strength through every crushing contraction. He wiped her damp forehead with cool cloths, whispered steady words of encouragement into her ear, and let her squeeze his fingers so tightly his knuckles turned white.
“You’re doing amazing, my love,” Julian whispered, his voice steady and close to her ear as another wave of pain peaked. “Just breathe with me. In and out. You’re almost there.”
“I can't... Julian, it hurts so much!” Elise cried out, tears streaming down her exhausted face as she gripped his arm.
“I know, darling,” Julian said, kissing her temple with fierce, protective devotion. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. Look at me... look into my eyes, Elise. Focus on me.”
Elise locked her eyes onto his icy blue gaze, finding in his strength the anchor she needed to pull herself through the darkest waves of pain.
At 4:42 AM, Dr. Rostova stood at the foot of the bed with a glowing smile.
“One last big push, Elise!” Dr. Rostova commanded warmly. “She’s right here! Give me everything you’ve got!”
Elise gathered every remaining ounce of strength in her soul. She let out a fierce, breathless cry, squeezing Julian’s hand with all her strength as she pushed with all her heart.
A second later, a sharp, clear, triumphant cry echoed through the room.
The sound of a newborn baby crying—loud, strong, and vibrant with life.
“She’s here!” Dr. Rostova laughed happily, gently holding up the tiny, wriggling baby girl. “A perfectly healthy, beautiful baby girl!”
Elise collapsed back against the white pillows, completely exhausted, tears of overwhelmed joy washing down her cheeks.
Julian let out a ragged, trembling breath, a drop of emotion slipping down his cheek as he looked at the tiny creature. The formidable billionaire who had faced down ruthless corporate raiders without flinching was completely undone by the sight of the small, perfect girl.
Dr. Rostova quickly cleaned the baby, wrapped her in a warm pink blanket, and carefully laid her onto Elise’s bare chest.
Elise’s arms instinctively wrapped around the small, warm bundle. She looked down at her daughter’s tiny face—her delicate pink nose, her dark eyelashes, and her small, perfect hands clutching blindly at the blanket.
“Oh... my sweet girl...” Elise wept softly, pressing her lips against the baby’s silky forehead. “You made it... you’re safe...”
Julian stepped closer, sitting gently on the edge of the mattress. He reached out with a trembling finger, gently touching the baby’s tiny hand. The newborn instinctively wrapped her tiny fingers around Julian’s broad pinky finger, holding on tightly.
Julian swallowed hard, a beautiful, breathless laugh escaping his lips.
“She’s magnificent, Elise,” Julian whispered softly, looking up at the woman he loved with tears shining in his eyes. “What are you going to name her?”
Elise looked at her daughter, then looked up into Julian’s warm, loving face.
“Grace,” Elise said softly, her voice filled with absolute conviction. “Grace Vance Miller. Because she survived by the absolute grace of the man who saved us.”
Julian froze, staring at her in stunned silence as the name sank into his heart.
Grace Vance.

A deep, powerful emotion broke through his composure. He leaned down, placing a tender, lingering kiss on Elise’s lips, then rested his forehead against hers as the baby slept peacefully between them.
“I promise you both,” Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion, “I will love you and protect you until my very last breath.”
