Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Equals

The trustees filed out of the boardroom in tense, hurried silence, eager to escape the suffocating pressure hanging in the air.
Within minutes, the vast boardroom was completely empty, except for Lena and Lorenzo, who stood on opposite sides of the long mahogany table.
Lena stood near her binder, her hands leaning against the polished wood. Her heart was beating fast, her breath coming in soft, steady cycles as the adrenaline of her speech slowly receded.
Lorenzo walked slowly down the length of the table, stopping just a foot away from her.
“You came here yourself,” he murmured, a faint, genuine smile gracing his dark features.
“I told you,” Lena said softly, looking up into his dark eyes. “I don't hide behind screens. And I don't let people fight my battles for me.”
Lorenzo reached out, taking both of her hands in his. “You were extraordinary.”
“You didn't have to sign that three-year extension,” Lena noted, searching his face. “You could have let the board vote.”
“I didn't sign it because of what happened between us in the country, Lena,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a tender, velvet register. “I signed it because you are brilliant at what you do. And because I refuse to live in a world where I have to hide how much I admire you.”
Lena felt a tear escape her eye, but this time it was not from frustration. It was from relief.
“I’m sorry for running away on Sunday,” she admitted gently, squeezing his fingers. “I was terrified of losing everything I had spent my life building.”
“I know,” Lorenzo said, raising her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles with deep reverence. “I was terrified of losing you.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek silver key, placing it into the palm of her hand.
“What is this?” Lena asked, looking down at the metal key.
“It’s the key to the private lift that leads directly to my apartment on the top floor,” Lorenzo said softly. “No press, no board members, no barriers. Just a key.”
Lena looked up from the key into his dark, loving eyes.
“Does this mean I have to manage your personal account now?” she teased softly, a spark of her signature wit returning to her eyes.
Lorenzo laughed—a rich, deep sound that echoed through the high glass room.

“Ms. Whitmore,” Lorenzo said, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close against his chest, “you are the only person in this city who has ever successfully managed me.”
Lena smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck, and lifted her face to kiss him—a slow, passionate kiss that silenced every remaining doubt between them.
