Chapter 9 - The Trial of Iron

The lower dungeons were cold, damp, and smelled of rust and old water.

Nolan Creed and Dr. Evan Rook were shackled to the stone wall by heavy iron chains wrapped around their wrists and ankles.

When the heavy steel door opened, light from three burning torches spilled into the dark cell.

Caleb stepped into the room, followed closely by Mara and Lord Varner.

Nolan lifted his bruised head, his eyes wild with desperation as he looked at the Alpha King.

“Caleb!” Nolan cried out, straining against his iron chains. “Listen to me! Vance forced me into this! He threatened my family in the northern valley! I had no choice!”

Dr. Rook was weeping quietly in the corner, his knees pulled up to his chin.

Caleb didn't answer. He stepped aside, allowing Mara to walk into the center of the cell.

She no longer wore her medical apron. She wore a deep crimson cloak over her dress, her hair braided back like a warrior’s, her golden eyes burning brightly in the torchlight.

Nolan stared at her, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief.

“You...” Nolan whispered. “The inventory girl...”

“You called me a nobody two nights ago, Nolan,” Mara said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of fear. “You said no one would notice if I died in the medical stores.”

Nolan swallowed hard, his eyes flicking nervously toward Caleb. “Mara... please... I didn't mean—”

“Silence,” Mara commanded softly.

The power in her voice—a blend of her own White Ash authority and Caleb’s Alpha bond— hit Nolan like a physical strike. His mouth snapped shut instantly, his jaw locked against his will.

Mara stepped closer to the iron chains.

“You tried to kill the King with synthetic silver,” she said. “You opened the gates to Marcus Vance, leading to the deaths of four territory lords and twenty estate guards. Under the laws of the western mountains, what is the penalty for treason, Lord Varner?”

Lord Varner stepped forward, his heavy hand resting on his sword hilt. “Death by public execution at sundown, my Lady.”

Nolan began to shake violently, tears streaming down his dirty cheeks. “Caleb! Please! We were friends for fifteen years! You can't let this human servant decide my fate!”

Caleb looked at Nolan with absolute, terrifying indifference.

“She is not a human servant, Nolan,” Caleb said coldly. “She is the ruler of this territory. Her word is law.”

Mara looked at Nolan for a long, silent moment.

She remembered her mother’s death—a lonely, painful end in a cold room, ruined by fear of men like Nolan who used strength to crush the weak. She remembered the decades her family had spent running from tyrants who saw people only as tools or obstacles.

She lowered her gaze.

“There will be no execution,” Mara said.

Nolan gasped, his eyes lighting up with sudden, desperate hope. “Thank you... thank you, Lady Mara—!”

“You will not die,” Mara interrupted, her voice turning to pure ice. “Instead, you and Dr. Rook will be stripped of your titles, your lands, and your wolf status. Your bonds to the pack will be severed forever.”

She stepped forward, touching the iron chains with her bare hand.

“You will be banished to the northern wasteland,” she continued. “Where you will spend the rest of your lives working in the medical relief camps, helping the human refugees you spent decades ignoring.”

Nolan’s face turned white as snow. For a wolf, losing pack status and being banished to serve human refugees was a fate far worse than a quick death by the sword.

“No...” Nolan whimpered. “Please... just kill me...”

“That is my judgment,” Queen Mara said flatly.

She turned her back on the iron chains and walked out of the cell, her crimson cloak swirling behind her.

Caleb looked at Lord Varner. “Carry out the Queen’s orders immediately.”

“Yes, Alpha,” Varner bowed low.
