Chapter 6 - The Harbor Auction

The venue for the auction was a converted nineteenth-century brick warehouse situated on the dark, misty docks of Boston Harbor. Cold ocean air smelled heavily of salt, old wood, and diesel fuel as a line of dark luxury sedans and armored limousines idled along the pier.

armed guards with heavy automatic weapons stood at thirty-foot intervals along the perimeter, their eagle eyes scanning the shadows. The atmosphere was heavy with unspoken violence—a fragile, artificial truce maintained only by the mutual destruction assured if anyone broke the peace.

Matteo’s SUV ground to a halt near the main entrance. Leo opened the door, stepping out first with a sleek umbrella to block the freezing rain.

Matteo stepped out, turned, and offered his hand to Penny. She took it. His grip was warm, solid, and completely steady—a firm anchor in a sea of chaotic fear. She stepped onto the wet cobblestones, the cool wind whipping her silk dress around her ankles.

“Remember,” Matteo murmured down to her as they walked toward the heavy arched entrance, his arm wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her close to his side. “Stay close to me. Keep your eyes up. Let them think you belong here.”

“I’m an actress,” Penny muttered through a brilliant, fake smile, her hand resting against his muscular forearm. “I act like I care about drunk customers every night. This is just a bigger stage.”

Matteo let out a low chuckle. “That’s my girl.”

They stepped through the double oak doors into a vast, breathtaking interior. The warehouse had been transformed into an opulent, black-tie paradise—crystal chandeliers hung from iron roof trusses, mahogany bars slung thousand-dollar champagne, and wealthy, powerful men in tuxedos whispered with dangerous, stunning women draped in diamonds.

The moment Matteo Conti walked into the room, a palpable hush swept across the floor.

Conversations died down. Eyeballs cut toward the entrance. Whispers spread like wildfire across the room. Men bowed their heads slightly in respect; others watched him with intense, predatory calculation. And every single person in the building stared at the unknown, breathtaking woman holding his arm.

“They’re looking at us,” Penny whispered under her breath, keeping her head high, her chin squared.

“They are looking at you,” Matteo corrected quietly, leading her toward the VIP balcony overlooking the main auction floor. “They are trying to figure out who could possibly make Matteo Conti bring a date to an underworld auction.”

Suddenly, the crowd parted ahead of them.

A tall, thin man with slicked-back gray hair, a manicured mustache, and a sharp, silver tuxedo stepped into their path. His eyes were small, cold, and dark—like a snake calculating its strike. Beside him stood a hulking man with a broken nose and heavy ringed fingers.

Penny felt Matteo’s muscles instantly harden to steel beneath her hand.

“Matteo,” the slicked-back man said, his voice greasy and overly polite. “I was beginning to think you wouldn't grace us with your presence tonight.”

“Arthur,” Matteo replied flatly, his voice utterly devoid of warmth. “I never miss an opportunity to watch desperate men sell off their assets.”

Arthur Vance—the deputy director of the task force—turned his cold snakelike eyes toward Penny. A subtle, terrifying flash of recognition flickered in his dark pupils before he quickly smoothed his expression into a polite mask.

“And who is this exquisite young lady?” Vance asked, taking a step toward Penny, extending a soft, pale hand. “I don't believe we’ve had the pleasure.”

Before Vance’s fingers could touch Penny’s hand, Matteo smoothly stepped into his line of sight, blocking Vance completely with his massive shoulder. The sheer physical menace radiating off Matteo was terrifying.

“Her name is off-limits to you, Arthur,” Matteo said, his voice quiet, low, and laced with absolute lethality. “And if you raise your hand toward her again, you won't have fingers left to sign your task force reports.”

Vance’s fake smile faltered, his face turning pale with dark rage. “Is that a threat, Conti?”

“It’s a factual statement,” Matteo said smoothly. “Now move out of my way. You’re ruining the atmosphere.”
