Chapter 10 - The Space We Choose

One year later.
The grand courtyard of the Bellandi estate on Lake Michigan was decorated with thousands of white roses, trailing ivy, and soft fairy lights that sparkled under the clear summer night sky.
Two hundred guests sat in elegant gold chiavari chairs—senior executives, civic leaders, logistics partners, and the entire staff of Bellandi Enterprises.
At the altar, standing beneath a canopy of white orchids, stood Nico Bellandi.
He wore a custom black tuxedo, looking taller, broader, and more handsome than ever. Beside him stood Marcus, serving as his best man, looking unusually sharp in his formal dress suit.
The string quartet began to play a slow, breathtaking arrangement of classical violin.
The doors to the estate terrace opened.
Vanessa Parker walked down the white aisle.
She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of heavy ivory silk that fitted her curves perfectly, sweeping down into a long, dramatic train that brushed the petals along the carpet. Her dark hair was styled into an intricate, elegant updo pinned with diamond hairpins, and her face was radiant with pure, unhidden happiness.
She carried no cat cards. She wore no grey sweaters.
She walked with her head held high, her chin lifted, commanding the admiration of every person in the courtyard.
When she reached the altar, Nico stepped down to take her hand.
His fingers were warm, steady, and strong as he brought her hand to his lips, pressing a tender kiss against her knuckles.
"You look breathtaking, my love," Nico whispered, his voice rough with emotion.
"You don't look so bad yourself, boss," Vanessa whispered back, her eyes sparkling with soft humor.
The justice of the peace stepped forward, holding a silver ceremonial book.
"We are gathered here today," the officiant began, "to unite Nico Bellandi and Vanessa Parker in holy matrimony."
The ceremony was short, powerful, and deeply moving.
When the time came for the exchange of vows, Nico looked directly into Vanessa’s eyes, taking both of her hands in his.
"Vanessa," Nico said, his low voice carrying clearly through the silent courtyard. "A year ago, I met a woman who tried to convince me she was awkward, invisible, and crazy. But behind those wire-rimmed glasses, I saw the smartest, fiercest, and most magnificent woman I had ever met."
He squeezed her hands gently.
"I promise to stand beside you as your equal," Nico swore softly. "I promise to protect your freedom, honour your mind, and build a world where you never have to hide who you are again. My home is your home. My life is your life."
Vanessa felt a single, warm tear slip down her cheek. She smiled through her tears, stepping closer to him.
"Nico," Vanessa said, her voice clear and strong. "You are the only man in this city who was smart enough to look past my defenses and brave enough to challenge my mind. You showed me that love isn't a vulnerability—it's the greatest strength we can hold."
She pulled his hands against her heart.
"I promise to build our empire beside you," Vanessa vowed. "To calculate our risks, share our victories, and take up all the space in this world together."
"By the power vested in me by the State of Illinois," the officiant announced with a broad smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Nico, you may kiss your bride."
Nico didn't wait.
He wrapped his long arms around Vanessa’s waist, lifting her off her feet, and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate, eternal kiss that set off a deafening roar of applause from the two hundred guests in the courtyard.
Later that night, as the music faded and the moon rose high over Lake Michigan, Nico and Vanessa stood together on the private upper balcony of their estate, looking out over the water.
Vanessa leaned back against Nico’s broad chest, wrapped in his heavy suit jacket, watching the moonlight reflect off the quiet waves.
Inside the bedroom behind them, Gerald the orange cat was curled up on a hundred-thousand-dollar silk rug, sleeping peacefully.
Nico reached down, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin gently against her hair.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Bellandi?" Nico whispered softly into the night air.
Vanessa reached up, holding his large hands over her heart, looking at the bright, shining stars above the Chicago skyline.

"I'm completely happy, Mr. Bellandi," Vanessa whispered back, her heart filled with absolute, unwavering peace. "No fake stories. No hiding. Just us."
And as the cool lake breeze swept through the white roses of the terrace, Vanessa Parker rested in the arms of the man who loved her, knowing that she would never, ever have to apologize for taking up space again.
