Chapter 9 - The Gilded Cage

Three months passed.

Spring arrived in Chicago, melting the snow and bringing green life back to the city parks. Aara Hayes settled into her new life—a life that would have seemed like an impossible dream just six months prior.

She lived in a beautiful two-story townhouse filled with natural light. Her father’s health had improved dramatically thanks to the top specialists Dante had secured, and her debt was completely erased. With the financial freedom provided to her, Aara had quit her waitress job at Il Corvo and taken a position as an associate restorer at one of Chicago’s premier art galleries.

To the outside world, she was a success story—a hardworking girl who had gotten a lucky break.

Yet, her life felt empty.

Every night, she returned to her quiet, beautiful house and looked out over the city lights, thinking of the dark fortress on the lake and the man who ruled it. She caught herself looking for black Bentleys in traffic, scanning the news for any mention of the Vulov family, and remembering the warmth of Dante’s coat around her shoulders on the freezing terrace.

She had her freedom, but her heart remained captive in the lake house.

One evening, Aara attended an exclusive gallery opening downtown—a high-society event celebrating a new exhibition of Renaissance Italian art. The room was packed with wealthy patrons, collectors, and city elites sipping champagne.

As Aara was demonstrating the restoration work on a seventeenth-century oil painting to a group of guests, a gentle, familiar voice spoke behind her.

“You always did have an incredible eye for detail, my dear.”

Aara spun around. Standing there, dressed in a gorgeous plum silk dress and wearing her signature pearl necklace, was Isabella Vulov.

“Isabella!” Aara exclaimed, a genuine smile breaking across her face for the first time in months. She stepped forward and embraced the older woman warmly.

“Look at you,” Isabella said, stepping back to admire her with proud eyes. “You look radiant, Aara. You belong here.”

“I missed you so much,” Aara said softly. “How have you been? How is... how is everyone?”

Isabella’s smile softened into a look of quiet sympathy. “The family is well. The business is stable. But my son...” She paused, shaking her head gently. “Dante is more cold and distant than he has ever been. He works twenty hours a day, he rarely sleeps, and he has not smiled once since you left.”

Aara felt a sharp pang in her chest. “He wanted me to leave. He said it was for my safety.”

“Dante is a fool who thinks he can protect people by pushing them into the dark,” Isabella said firmly, taking Aara’s hand. “He thinks he is doing what is right for you, but he is breaking his own heart in the process. He loves you, Aara. He has loved you since the night you threw a brick at a minivan to save an old woman.”

Aara’s breath caught in her throat. “Isabella...”

“He is standing outside right now,” Isabella revealed quietly, gesturing toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading to the gallery’s courtyard. “He refused to come inside because he didn't want to disrupt your night. But he came here just to stand in the dark and watch you succeed from afar.”

Aara looked toward the glass doors. Outside, in the shadows of the courtyard beneath the falling rain, stood a tall figure in a dark coat, staring in through the glass directly at her.
