Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece

Six months later.
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in glowing warm chandelier light, filled with the city's most powerful political figures, business moguls, and high-society elite for the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala.
At the center table overlooking the dance floor sat Gabriel Costa.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo that fitted his broad shoulders perfectly. His dark hair was neatly styled, his granite face set in its usual quiet, commanding posture. But he was not looking at the politicians, nor was he reviewing business ledgers.
His dark, fiery eyes were fixed entirely on the woman standing beside him.
Harper wore an exquisite backless emerald silk gown that clung flawlessly to her elegant figure. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate, regal style, exposing her long, delicate neck and her flawless, glowing shoulders.
There was no peach corrector on her skin. There was no heavy, suffocating full-coverage foundation. There was no translucent powder pressed into raw wounds to hide the evidence of a monster's cruelty.
Her skin was porcelain, smooth, and bare—radiant under the crystal chandeliers for the entire world to see.
When a prominent city senator walked past their table, bowing his head respectfully to Gabriel, his eyes drifted toward Harper, wide with admiration. "Good evening, Mr. Costa. And to your breathtaking companion."
"This is Harper Costa," Gabriel corrected smoothly, his voice carrying an unmistakable note of absolute pride. "My wife. And the managing director of the Costa Foundation."
The senator blinked in surprise, then bowed quickly. "A pleasure, Mrs. Costa. An absolute honor."
When the senator walked away, Harper turned to Gabriel, a soft, radiant laugh escaping her lips. "Mrs. Costa still sounds very new."
"You will get used to it," Gabriel murmured, leaning close to her ear, his hand settling comfortably over her hip. "It is a lifetime appointment."
Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite silver compact mirror. He opened it and held it up gently in front of her face.
Harper looked at her reflection in the small circle of glass.
She saw no fear in her hazel eyes. She saw no flinch in her jaw. She saw no shadow of Trent, no memory of the dark basement, and no remnants of the terrified girl who spent forty-five minutes every morning painting a lie over her wounds.
She saw a woman who had walked through fire, reclaimed her power, and found a sanctuary in the arms of the most dangerous man in the city.
Harper looked up from the mirror, meeting Gabriel’s dark, intense gaze.
"What do you see?" Gabriel asked softly.
Harper reached out, her fingers lightly tracing the sharp, familiar line of his jawline, leaning in until her lips brushed against his.

"I see a masterpiece," she whispered.
And as the orchestra began to play a slow, rich waltz across the grand ballroom, Gabriel Costa took his wife by the hand, led her into the center of the light, and danced with her under the eyes of a city that was finally, completely theirs.
