Chapter 8 - The Puppet Master

Claire felt the room spin around her.

She set her espresso cup on the saucer with a loud clack, her face turning completely white.

“What... what did you say?” she whispered.

“Bernardo Moretti knew you fled to America,” Mateo said, his hazel eyes burning with cold rage. “He didn't want you dead seven years ago because your father’s will stated that if you died without heirs, your father’s forty-percent share of the Moretti shipping syndicate would automatically pass to me.”

Claire’s jaw dropped. “My father left his shares to you?”

“Yes,” Mateo confirmed. “Your father trusted me. He knew Bernardo was corrupt. So Bernardo needed you alive, but he needed you broken. He hired Gavin Bennett to track you down, marry you, isolate you, and ensure you were too terrified and emotionally destroyed to ever return to Palermo or claim your inheritance.”

Claire sat frozen, her mind frantically rewiring four years of horrific memories.

Gavin’s sudden interest in her at the diner. His push to get married within three months. His constant efforts to sever her ties with coworkers. His violent outbursts whenever she mentioned saving money or taking a vacation.

It hadn't been random bad luck. It hadn't been an abusive husband who couldn't control his temper.

It was a cold, calculated, paid assignment funded by her own uncle to keep her enslaved in a living hell.

Tears of pure, white-hot fury welled up in Claire’s blue eyes. The fear that had ruled her life for seven years evaporated instantly, replaced by an ancient, aristocratic rage that belonged to the true heir of the Moretti bloodline.

“He paid Gavin to break me,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it sounded remarkably like Mateo’s.

“Yes,” Mateo said softly.

Claire stood up from her chair. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows, looking out at the sunlit lawn below. Her back was straight, her chin raised, every trace of the cowering waitress gone.

“Where is Bernardo now?” Claire asked, turning back to face him.

“He is currently in Chicago,” Mateo revealed, standing up to meet her gaze. “He arrived yesterday afternoon for the annual Midwest Maritime Trade Summit at the Drake Hotel. He thinks he is here to finalize the merger between the Moretti syndicate and the local transport unions.”

Claire looked at Mateo—the man she had sacrificed her life to protect, the man who had torn down her prison in a single night.

“Mateo,” Claire spoke, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the room.

“Sì, mia cara?”

“Is your invitation to the trade summit still valid?”

A dark, slow, lethal smile spread across Mateo Rossi’s handsome face.

“Chiara,” Mateo murmured, walking over to stand right in front of her, bowing his head slightly in reverence. “For you... I own the summit.”
