Chapter 5 - LESSONS IN SHADOWS

Two weeks passed.

The Locke Estate became Harper's universe.

Every morning, Dr. Vance checked her leg, replacing her heavy cast with a lighter, fiberglass walking boot.

Every afternoon, Harper sat in Gideon's massive private library, surrounded by thousands of leather-bound books, laying out detailed architectural diagrams on a large oak table.

Gideon sat beside her for hours, listening intently as she explained the inner mechanics of the Maritime Bank.

"My father built the vault in 1988," Harper explained, using a laser pointer to highlight a cross-section blueprint. "The walls are three feet of reinforced concrete lined with copper mesh to prevent thermal imaging."

Gideon leaned closer, his shoulder brushing against hers.

"And the mechanical lock on Vault 404?" Gideon asked, his deep voice vibrating against her skin.

"It's a dual-rotary clockwork mechanism," Harper said, showing him a drawing of gears. "It doesn't run on electricity. You can't hack it digitally. You have to physically align four brass tumbler pins inside the ventilation duct above the main door."

Gideon studied the drawing, his grey eyes bright with intense concentration.

"And you can align them?" he asked.

"My father taught me how to feel the tumbler drops when I was twelve," Harper said with a faint, proud smile. "He called it the architect's heartbeat."

Gideon turned his head, staring at her profile.

He looked at her dark hair, her sharp hazel eyes, and the newfound confidence blooming in her face. Over the past two weeks, the terrified girl from the linoleum floor had vanished.

In her place stood a brilliant, sharp woman who commanded the room.

"You're extraordinary, Harper," Gideon said softly.

Harper froze, her cheeks flushing warm. She looked at him.

"You're not what I expected, Gideon," she confessed quietly. "I thought you were just a mob boss who used muscle to get what he wanted."

"Muscle is cheap," Gideon replied, stepping closer to her chair. "Brains are rare. Honor is even rarer."

He reached out, his long fingers gently touching the side of her neck, his thumb resting against her pulse point.

Harper's heart hammered against her ribs—not from fear, but from a sudden, overwhelming wave of desire.

"Do you trust me, Harper?" Gideon asked, his voice a quiet whisper.

Harper looked into his intense grey eyes.

"I think... I trust you more than I've ever trusted anyone," she admitted.

Before Gideon could respond, the library door flew open.

Mark stepped into the room, his face pale and covered in sweat.

"Gideon," Mark said urgently. "We have a problem. The Russian syndicate just seized the Maritime Bank building. They know about Vault 404."
