Chapter 6 - The Breach

Three days later, Harper sat in the sunlit dining room of the penthouse, working through a set of gentle physical therapy exercises with her trainer.
Her leg had healed remarkably well. She could now walk short distances without her crutches, using only a light cane for stability. Her confidence had returned, her skin had regained its healthy glow, and the terrified, battered girl from the linoleum floor was fading into a memory.
Her phone—a new, secure encrypted device Gideon had given her—vibrated on the table.
Harper picked it up. An incoming call from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
She hesitated, her heart giving a quick flutter, but answered it anyway. "Hello?"
"Harper?" a terrified, sobbing voice came through the speaker.
Harper’s body went cold instantly. "Sadie?! Sadie, is that you?"
"Harper! Oh God, Harper, don't come here!" Sadie cried out, her voice muffled as if she were breathing through a cloth. "They have guns! They said—"
A harsh, unfamiliar male voice cut through the line, displacing Sadie’s cries.
"Hello, Miss Vale," Marco Salerno’s oily voice purred through the speaker.
Harper gripped the edge of the table so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Who are you?! What have you done to my sister?!"
"My name is Marco Salerno," the man replied smoothly. "Your little boyfriend Tyler owed me a lot of money, Miss Vale. And then your new benefactor, Mr. Locke, decided to destroy my business because of you. I consider that a very rude intrusion."
"If you touch her," Harper growled, her voice shaking with a fierce, protective rage she didn't know she possessed, "Gideon will tear you apart!"
Marco laughed—a dry, grating sound. "Mr. Locke is currently busy at his docks handling a minor disturbance my men created. He isn't with you, is he?"
Harper’s eyes darted around the empty penthouse. It was true. Gideon was out in the city, supervising a major security operation.
"Here are my terms, Miss Vale," Marco said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp threat. "You will leave the penthouse alone. You will take a taxi to the abandoned grain silo on 47th Street. You have forty-five minutes. If you tell Locke, if I see his security teams near the building, I will put a bullet through your sister’s head."
The line went dead.
Harper stood in the center of the vast, quiet dining room, the phone clutching against her chest, her mind racing in absolute panic.
Sadie—her sweet, innocent sister who had tried so hard to protect her from Tyler—was in the hands of monsters because of her.
She looked toward the private elevator. She knew she should call Gideon. She knew his men could handle anything. But Marco’s words echoed in her mind: If I see his security teams... I will put a bullet through your sister's head.
Harper made her decision.
She walked quickly into the master suite, pulled on a dark jacket, and grabbed the sleek aluminum cane resting against the wall.
As she reached the elevator, Briggs—who had been posted outside the penthouse doors—stepped into her path.
"Miss Vale?" Briggs asked, eyebrow raised. "Where are you going? Mr. Locke instructed that you stay inside today."
Harper looked Briggs directly in the eye. She saw the heavy tactical holster beneath his jacket, the sharp, intelligent eyes of a professional soldier.
"Briggs," Harper said softly, holding her phone out to him. "My sister has been taken by Marco Salerno. He gave me forty-five minutes to reach the 47th Street silo."
Briggs’ face turned into liquid iron. He grabbed his radio instantly. "Boss. We have a Code Crimson. Salerno grabbed the sister. Miss Vale is moving."
Harper reached out, laying her hand over Briggs’ radio arm.
"Don't stop me, Briggs," Harper said, her voice filled with an unyielding, fierce authority that made the veteran guard pause. "If you try to lock me in here, my sister dies. I am going to that silo. Tell Gideon to meet me there."

Briggs looked at her—at the determination burning in her eyes, so remarkably similar to the iron resolve Gideon carried—and lowered his radio slowly.
"I won't stop you, Miss Vale," Briggs said softly, drawing two heavy handguns from his harness. "Because I’m coming with you."
