Chapter 10 - The Horizon

One year later.

The sun was setting over the coastal cliffs of Kennebunkport, Maine, casting a warm golden light across the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

A cozy, two-story cedarwood cottage sat on the edge of the bluff, surrounded by wild coastal flowers and pine trees. The old limestone mansion in Boston had been sold, its proceeds donated entirely to a newly established foundation providing medical assistance and legal aid to victims of domestic abuse and corporate coercion.

On the cottage terrace, a large wooden easel was set up facing the ocean.

Ava stood before the canvas, a paintbrush in her hand, dressed in a comfortable linen dress. She didn't need her cane anymore. Her legs were strong, grounded, and steady beneath her. She painted with long, fluid strokes, capturing the deep blues and purples of the evening sky.

The back door opened, and Ethan walked out onto the terrace holding two mugs of hot tea.

He walked up behind her, setting the mugs on a small side table before wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin softly on her shoulder just as he used to do years ago.

"It's beautiful," Ethan murmured, looking at the painting.

"It's home," Ava replied, leaning back against his chest, placing her hands over his.

From inside the house, the sound of cheerful laughter floated out through the open windows. Lena was visiting for the weekend, taking a break from her sophomore year at Boston University, helping prepare dinner in the kitchen.

Ethan kissed Ava’s cheek, feeling the soft warmth of her skin—a warmth that had returned fully, chasing away every ghost of the cold, dark years.

"I called the foundation today," Ethan said softly. "We’ve successfully funded twenty new physical rehabilitation grants for patients this month. The first clinic opens in July."

Ava turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into his warm brown eyes.

"You built something good out of the wreckage, Ethan," she said softly.

May you like

"We did," Ethan corrected her, leaning down to press his lips to hers in a long, sweet, tender kiss that tasted of ocean air and absolute peace. "We built it together."

When they finally broke apart, they turned back toward the ocean, holding hands tightly as the last golden rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, lighting up the infinite open sea before them.
