Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Lie

The gala ended late into the night, but the tension between the families reached a boiling point. The ride back to the estate was silent, filled with an electric awareness between Lorenzo and Meline that had grown too intense to ignore.

Once inside the privacy of the mansion's vast library, Meline unpinned her hair, letting the dark waves tumble over her shoulders. She turned to face Lorenzo, who was pouring two glasses of amber scotch at the bar.

"We need to talk," Meline said softly.

Lorenzo handed her a glass, his eyes dark and questioning. "About what?"

"About this fiction," Meline said, looking down at the heavy sapphire necklace resting against her collarbone. "Tonight... what you said to Hector Lombardi. You played the part so well that even I almost believed it. But we both know why I am here. You are protecting me from a mess your reputation brought to my door."

Lorenzo set his glass down on the mahogany desk with a firm click. He walked toward her, his dark eyes never leaving hers. "Do you truly think this is just an act for me, Meline?"

"Isn't it?" Meline asked, her voice cracking slightly as her internal insecurities flared up. "Look at the world you live in. Look at the women who belong in it. I am a tailor from South Boston. I don't fit into your world, Lorenzo. When the Lombardi threat is gone, what happens? Do I just go back to my shop and pretend I didn't spend weeks having the most powerful man in the city look at me like..."

"Like what?" Lorenzo pressed, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of her, his tall frame looming over her. "Like I am a man starving, and you are the only thing that can save me?"

Meline gasped softly.

Lorenzo reached out, his warm, rough hands gently cupping her face. His thumb stroked her cheekbone with unbelievable tenderness. "Six weeks ago, I walked into your shop because my associates told me you were the best tailor in New England. But the moment I sat on your green sofa and watched you work—watched the passion in your eyes, the grace of your hands, the fiery spirit you tried so hard to hide—I couldn't leave."

"Lorenzo..."

"I didn't need new suits, Meline," Lorenzo confessed, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. "I tore seams in my own jackets just to have an excuse to bring them back to you. I asked those ridiculous romantic questions because I wanted to see you smile. I wanted to hear your voice. I have been falling in love with you since the second afternoon I spent in your shop."

Meline’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart thundered in her chest as she looked into his silver-flecked eyes, searching for any sign of deception. She found none. There was only raw, absolute truth.

"You... you tore your own jackets?" she whispered, a small, tearful laugh escaping her lips.

"Three of them," Lorenzo admitted with a faint smirk. "Mario thought I had gone mad."

The remaining walls around Meline’s heart crumbled into dust. She lifted her hands, resting her palms against his solid chest, feeling the violent, rapid beat of his heart beneath his suit vest. He was terrified of her rejection. This lethal mafia boss was standing in front of her, vulnerable and exposed.

"You are an idiot," Meline murmured softly.

"Probably," Lorenzo agreed quietly. "But I am your idiot, if you'll have me."

Meline stood on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a kiss.

The kiss was explosive. Lorenzo let out a low groan, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist, pulling her body flush against his. He kissed her with a deep, desperate hunger that swept away every doubt Meline had ever possessed about herself. She melted into his heat, her fingers tangling in his dark hair as the library vanished around them.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

"No more pretending," Lorenzo whispered against her lips. "You are my fiancée, Meline. For real."

Before Meline could answer, the heavy double doors of the library were slammed open.

Mario stood in the entrance, his face bloody and his expression pale. "Boss! We have a breach! Lombardi’s mercenaries cut the power to the perimeter gates. They are inside the grounds!"
