Chapter 4 - THE ARRESTED MOTHER

The 12th Street police station smelled of stale coffee, wet raincoats, and floor wax.
Cole walked through the front doors holding Lily in his right arm, flanked by Marcus Kane and two of his top private investigators.
In the small, fluorescent-lit holding room behind the desk, Maria Delgado sat at a metal table. She was handcuffed to a steel loop on the wall. Her housekeeping uniform was rumpled, her face covered in dried tears, her eyes hollow with an absolute, crushing despair that broke Cole’s heart to look at.
When the door opened and she saw Cole walk in holding her daughter, Maria gasped, trying to stand up, her handcuffs clanking loudly against the iron frame.
“Lily!” Maria cried out, her voice breaking into sob. “Oh God, Lily!”
“Mommy!” Lily squealed, reaching her small arms out.
Cole stepped forward instantly, unlocking the chair beside her, setting Lily gently into her mother’s lap. Maria buried her wet face into her daughter’s neck, weeping so hard her whole frame shook.
“I’m sorry... I’m so sorry, baby,” Maria sobbed, kissing Lily’s hair over and over. “Mommy didn't leave you... they locked the door... they wouldn't let me back out to get you...”
Cole stood beside the table, his arms crossed over his chest, his jaw set like iron.
A detective walked into the room holding a manila folder.
“Mr. Merritt,” the detective said, bowing his head respectfully. “We received a formal complaint from your regional vice president, Mr. Julian Croft, at 6:30 PM. He claims Miss Delgado stole a sixty-thousand-dollar diamond ring from a VIP suite on the forty-second floor.”
“Did you find the ring on her?” Cole asked flatly.
“No, sir,” the detective replied. “Mr. Croft claims she passed it to an accomplice outside the service entrance.”
Maria looked up at Cole, her hazel eyes wild with terror and innocence.
“I didn't steal anything, Mr. Merritt!” Maria wept, shaking her head violently. “I swear on my daughter’s life! I have worked for your father’s company for six years! I never touched anything that wasn't mine!”
“I know,” Cole said softly.
Maria blinked, tears spilling over her lashes. “You... you believe me?”
“I saw the security footage, Maria,” Cole said gently. “I know what happened on the stairs.”
He turned to the detective.
“Unchain her,” Cole commanded.
The detective hesitated. “Sir, Mr. Croft signed the felony complaint on behalf of the Merritt Corporation—”
“I am the Merritt Corporation,” Cole interrupted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the holding room. “Drop all charges immediately. If you hold her for one more minute, my legal team will file a false imprisonment suit against this department by midnight.”
The detective didn't argue. He pulled a key from his pocket and unlocked the handcuffs from Maria’s wrists.
Maria pulled her daughter tight against her chest, weeping softly against Lily’s small red coat.

Cole reached down, taking Maria’s trembling arm gently, helping her stand up from the cold metal chair.
“Come with me, Maria,” Cole said softly. “It’s time to clean house.”
