Chapter 6 - The Blood on the Marble

"Dominic," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a tone so cold it seemed to freeze the very air in the foyer.
Dominic spun around, pointing his silver revolver toward the top of the stairs, but he was far too slow.
Adrian moved with blinding, inhuman speed. He leaped over the marble banister, dropping twelve feet onto the foyer floor, landing in a low roll, and coming up right in front of Dominic.
He grabbed Dominic's wrist, twisting it violently to the side. A sickening CRACK echoed through the room as Dominic's wrist snapped, causing him to drop the silver revolver onto the marble floor.
Dominic shrieked in agony, but Adrian didn't give him a second to breathe.
He slammed his heavy fist straight into Dominic's jaw, throwing the older man against the marble wall, then grabbed him by his coat lapels and slammed him down onto his knees on the cold floor—the exact position Dominic had intended to force Adrian into.
Behind them, Marcus and six heavily armed Vale security team members flooded the foyer from the rear corridors, quickly securing the scene and disarming the remaining wounded gunman.
"Boss! The perimeter is secure! We caught the mole at the south gate!" Marcus reported loudly.
Adrian didn't hear him. His entire focus was locked onto Dominic Moretti, who was panting, bleeding, and clutching his shattered wrist against his chest.
"You came into my house," Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously low, his face inches from the terrified old man's. "You threatened the woman I love. You came for my son."
"Adrian... please..." Dominic gasped, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "It was business... just business! The commission wanted—"
"I don't give a damn about the commission," Adrian interrupted quietly. He drew his matte-black 9mm pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against Dominic's forehead. "You made a mistake, Dominic. You thought I was a businessman who played by rules. You forgot why they call me the Wraith."
"Adrian, stop!"
The sharp, clear voice rang out across the marble foyer.
Adrian froze.
Mara was standing ten feet away near the entrance to the conservatory corridor. Her shoulder was bleeding slightly through her sweater from the strain of throwing the statue, her face was pale, but her brown eyes were fixed on Adrian with absolute clarity.
"Don't do it, Adrian," Mara said softly, taking a slow step toward him. "Not like this. Not in front of your home."
Adrian’s jaw tightened, his finger resting heavily on the trigger of his firearm. "He tried to take Noah, Mara. He tried to kill you."
"I know," Mara whispered, stepping closer, completely ignoring the armed men standing around the room. She reached out with her right hand, gently touching the warm side of Adrian's neck, just above his collar. "And you protected us. You saved us. But if you execute him on this floor, in cold blood... you give him the victory. You let his darkness consume the man you are."
Adrian looked up from Dominic's terrified face to meet Mara's eyes.
In those soft brown eyes, he saw no fear of him. He saw no judgment. He saw only love, mercy, and a gentle light that threatened to drive out every shadow he had carried for twenty years.
Slowly, excruciatingly, Adrian lowered his pistol.
He looked at Marcus. "Take him. Hand him over to Prosecutor Vance along with the complete ledger of the Moretti shipping operations. Let the federal court cage him for the rest of his pathetic life."
Dominic let out a shuddering breath of relief as Marcus and two guards seized his arms, dragging him out through the front doors into the swirling snowstorm.
Silence returned to the grand foyer.
Adrian stood up slowly, holstering his weapon. He turned to face Mara, looking down at his hands as if expecting to see blood on them.
"I almost lost my mind," Adrian whispered softly, his gray eyes shining with rare, vulnerable tears. "When Marcus called to tell me the gate had been breached... I thought I was too late."
Mara didn't say a word. She stepped straight into his arms, wrapping her right arm around his waist, resting her head against his chest over his beating heart.

Adrian wrapped his long arms around her, pulling her so tight that she could feel every breath he took, burying his face in her dark hair.
"You're not late, Adrian," Mara murmured softly into his coat. "You're right on time."
