Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW’S RESIDUAL ECHO

The winter weeks turned into early spring.

By April, the news of the massive federal indictment surrounding the Russo Group’s former COO, Marcus Vance, had faded from the front pages of the financial press. The market had recognized the absolute transparency with which the Russo Group had handled the investigation, resulting in the company’s stock reaching an all-time high.

Amelia’s leadership as Chief Forensic Risk Officer had earned her widespread acclaim across Wall Street. She was invited to speak at global financial compliance summits, recognized as a pioneer in trade-based fraud detection.

Yet, despite her elevated professional status, her heart remained anchored to the private world she shared with Damen.

It was a Tuesday evening in late April.

Amelia was finishing her late-night review in her forty-first-floor office when her private desk phone rang.

She picked it up. “Amelia Carter.”

“Miss Carter,” a crisp voice spoke—it was Viktor Vance, head of Damen’s private security detail. “I apologize for disturbing you at this hour, but I thought you should hear this directly from me before it hits the morning law enforcement wires.”

Amelia’s posture instantly straightened. “What happened, Viktor?”

“Victor Hail attempted to break his protective custody bail conditions two hours ago,” Viktor reported flatly. “He attempted to board a private charter vessel departing from a marina in South Jersey, intending to flee to South America.”

Amelia felt a brief spike of residual tension. “Was he successful?”

“Not even close,” Viktor replied, a hint of dark humor in his voice. “Federal marshals intercepted him at the dock. His plea bargain has been completely revoked. He is currently being transferred to a maximum-security remand facility in upstate New York to await trial. He will be facing a minimum of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole.”

Amelia sat back in her chair, letting out a quiet, definitive breath. “Thank you for telling me, Viktor.”

“Have a good night, Miss Carter. Mr. Russo’s car is waiting downstairs to take you home to the Manhattan penthouse.”

“Thank you, Viktor.”

Amelia hung up the phone. She looked out her floor-to-ceiling window at the glowing expanse of New York City below.

The ghost of Victor Hail—the threat that had hovered over her life for nearly a year—was officially, permanently erased. He would spend the next quarter-century behind concrete walls, trapped in the prison of his own selfish choices.

She felt no malice, no anger, and no desire for revenge. She felt only an absolute, pristine freedom.

She closed her laptop, picked up her leather coat, and walked toward the spiral staircase leading up to Damen’s penthouse suite.
