Chapter 10 - The Horizon on the Lake

One month later.

The early winter sun sat low on the horizon, painting the calm waters of Lake Michigan in brilliant shades of rose, amber, and gold. A light dust of white snow covered the manicured gardens of the Rossi estate in Oak Brook.

Inside the grand library, a fire crackled warmly in the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.

Gabriel stood by the wide bay window, holding a glass of aged brandy, watching the snow fall gently over the grounds.

Nathaniel Reed’s trial had been fast-tracked through federal court. Charged with aggravated assault, evidence tampering, filing false police reports, and official corruption, the former prosecutor was currently sitting in a maximum-security federal facility awaiting a twenty-year sentence.

The Rossi Outfit’s legal status was entirely cleared; the grand jury indictments had been dismissed with prejudice, leaving Gabriel’s empire stronger, cleaner, and more legitimate than it had ever been in thirty years.

A soft rustle of silk sounded near the library door.

Vivien stepped into the room, wearing a stunning burgundy velvet dress that matched the rich tones of the library. Her skin was flawless once again, the bruises entirely healed, her gray eyes shining with vibrant, renewed life.

She walked over to stand beside Gabriel at the window, looking out at the snow-covered estate.

"Your father called this morning," Gabriel said softly, turning his head to look down at her. "The new shipping container contracts for the port of Chicago were signed without a single municipal objection."

"Papa is calling it the best quarter Hayes Maritime has seen in twenty years," Vivien smiled, taking a sip from her own wine glass. "Though I think he’s mostly just looking for excuses to send you cases of sixty-year-old scotch."

Gabriel let out a quiet, genuine laugh—a warm, rare sound that filled the grand library. "He’s been very generous."

"He respects you, Gabriel," Vivien said, turning her body to face him, her gray eyes holding his dark gaze with absolute intensity. "We all do."

"And you, Vivien?" Gabriel asked, stepping closer to her, his long fingers gently reaching out to touch the soft velvet of her sleeve. "What do you feel?"

Vivien looked at the man who had picked her up out of the mud when the world she trusted had shattered into pieces. She saw the iron honor behind his dark eyes, the protective strength that had sheltered her from a storm that should have destroyed her family, and the quiet, profound affection he had shown her every single day since.

"I spent my entire life around men who pretended to be noble while hiding their cruelty behind laws and titles," Vivien whispered, her hand coming up to rest gently over Gabriel's heart, feeling its steady, powerful rhythm. "And then I found a man the world called a villain... who treated me with absolute honor."

Gabriel reached up, his large, warm hand cupping the side of her soft cheek, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jaw where the bruise had once been.

"You were never a victim to me, Vivien," Gabriel murmured softly, his face leaning down toward hers. "You were the bravest thing that ever walked into my life."

Vivien smiled, stepping up on her toes, closing the small distance between them, and pressed her lips against his.

The kiss was slow, warm, and deep—a quiet promise forged in rain, blood, and victory, sealing two powerful legacies into one unshakeable force.

Outside the window, the snow fell softly over Chicago, washing the city clean, as a new reign began.
