Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Three weeks after Lily spoke her first words, a sudden crisis threatened to tear down the empire Adrian had built.
A front-page story in the Detroit Free Press rocked the business community: “Ashford Freight Facing Federal Fraud Investigation over Falsified Shipping Records.”
The article detailed the four-hundred-thousand-dollar embezzlement scheme conducted by Dennis Greer, but it twisted the narrative entirely. Anonymous sources within the company claimed that Adrian Ashford had known about the fraud for years, using Greer to hide dark corporate losses, and that Emily Carter’s sudden promotion was a cover-up payout to buy her silence.
By 8:00 AM, the lobby of Ashford Tower was swarming with aggressive reporters and television camera crews.
Inside the executive boardroom, the company’s board of directors was in a state of absolute panic.
"The stock is down twelve percent since the market opened!" shouted Harold Vance, Victoria’s father and the third-largest shareholder. "The press is painting us as a corrupt criminal enterprise! We need to distance ourselves immediately!"
Adrian sat at the head of the table, his posture cold, his hands resting flat on the mahogany surface. "The investigation was initiated by me, Harold. I brought in the federal authorities. The article is a desperate smear campaign orchestrated by Greer’s defense team."
"It doesn't matter who started it!" Vance roared, slamming his fist on the table. "The public sees a billionaire who gave a two-million-dollar charity position to an uneducated factory girl right after a multi-million-dollar fraud was exposed! It looks like hush money, Adrian! The board demands Miss Carter’s immediate resignation!"
Several board members voiced their agreement, nodding frantically.
Before Adrian could unleash his fury, the double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Emily Carter walked into the room.
She wasn't wearing an executive suit. She wore her old navy work blazer, carrying a thick black leather binder under her arm. Beside her walked Marcus Lane and the Chief of Corporate Forensic Accounting.
"Miss Carter," Vance sneered. "This is a closed executive session. Leave us."
"Sit down, Mr. Vance," Emily said, her voice dropping into a register of authority so cold and commanding that Vance actually paused, surprised into silence.
Emily walked to the head of the table, placing her black binder in front of the board members.
"For the past seventy-two hours," Emily said calmly, "my team and federal forensic auditors have been reviewing every internal server log from Dennis Greer’s workstation dating back three years."
She opened the binder, flipping to a highlighted page of bank routing numbers.
"Dennis Greer didn't act alone," Emily revealed, her gaze locking onto Harold Vance’s pale face. "He was receiving monthly kickback payments of fifteen thousand dollars from an off-shore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. A company called Vance Logistics Holding."
The room went dead silent.
Harold Vance’s face instantly drained of all color. His hands began to visibly tremble against the table. "That's... that's a lie! A desperate fabrication!"
"The paper trail is certified by the IRS, Mr. Vance," Emily said, dropping a second document in front of him. "You were using Greer to steal Ashford inventory to supply your daughter’s private import business. When I questioned the logs last year, you personally instructed Greer to manufacture disciplinary write-ups to get me fired before I could bring the data to Mr. Ashford."
Adrian slowly stood up from his chair, his eyes fixed on Vance like a predator marking its prey.
"Marcus," Adrian said softly. "Are the federal marshals downstairs?"
"They are waiting in the lobby, Mr. Ashford," Marcus replied smoothly.
Harold Vance collapsed back into his leather chair, trembling uncontrollably as two corporate security guards stepped behind him.
Emily looked around the table at the remaining board members, her posture tall, radiant, and completely unshakeable.
"If any of you still believe my appointment was hush money," Emily declared, her voice echoing through the silent room, "you are welcome to review the quarterly impact reports. In ninety days, the Community Logistics division has saved this company 1.4 million dollars in waste disposal fees while feeding eight thousand families."
She closed her binder with a firm snap.
"My record is clear. My integrity is not for sale. And if you ever try to destroy this family again, I won't just take your board seats—I’ll take your company."
May you like
Without waiting for a response, Emily turned on her heel and walked out of the room.
The remaining board members sat in awed, terrified silence. Adrian looked at Vance being led away in cuffs, then looked at the open door where Emily had just departed, his heart brimming with fierce, absolute devotion.
