Chapter 3 - The Master of the House

At 12:45 PM, eleven hours after the breach, the black SUV motorcade rolled through the heavy iron gates of the Ferrante estate.
Elias Ferrante stepped out of the rear passenger seat before his bodyguards could open the door. He was thirty-eight years old, dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit that concealed the scarred tissue of three bullet wounds acquired during his ascension to the head of the syndicate.
The estate was strangely quiet. The grounds were cleared, but the air retained the sharp, metallic tang of cleaned blood and ozone.
Elias walked straight to the security wing in the basement.
His head of security, Marko—a brute of a man who had served Elias’s father—stood with his head bowed, eyes fixed on the concrete floor.
"Report," Elias said. His voice was low, devoid of emotion, which made it far more dangerous than if he had been shouting.
"The main power grid was bypassed from the off-site junction box at 01:39," Marko said, his voice tight. "They used military-grade frequency jammers to kill our short-range radios. The shift guards on the perimeter... they were taken out with tranquilizer darts. Non-lethal."
"Professional," Elias said flatly. "Who sent them?"
"We're checking the mercenary networks in Berlin and Munich. But boss... that's not the main issue."
"Explain."
Marko pointed to the monitor screen. "Watch the footage from the second-floor hallway."
Elias watched.
He saw the lights die. He saw the three shadows move up the grand staircase. He saw them approach his mother’s room, ignoring the master safe that contained four million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds and the encrypted ledgers of his entire operation.
Then he saw her.
Marin Hollis.
She stepped out of the shadows not like a frightened civilian, but with the ruthless efficiency of a phantom. In less than three minutes, she had neutralized three top-tier covert operatives using a bottle of antiseptic, a penlight, a surgical instrument, and pure kinetic leverage.
Elias watched the loop three times.
He noted her eyes. Even on the grainy, night-vision security feed, her expression never changed. There was no panic, no hesitation. Only cold, tactical execution.
"Where is she now?" Elias asked.
"She finished her shift at 07:00," Marko replied. "She filled out her shift log, signed the handover sheet for the day nurse, and took the bus home."
Elias turned slowly to look at his security chief. "She worked the rest of her shift?"
"Yes, sir. She spent four hours manually operating the suction equipment for your mother until the backup line was restored. Then she prepped Mrs. Ferrante’s breakfast, wiped down the room, and left."
Elias leaned over the console, looking at the forty-page dossier on Marin Hollis that had sat in his desk drawer for fourteen months.
