Chapter 2 - Blood and Ledger

Dr. Vance arrived in five minutes, accompanied by two silent, heavy-set enforcers carrying heavy leather medical bags. The doctor’s hands were shaking as he assessed the damage on the floor of Arthur’s office, but under the terrifying, unblinking glare of the mob boss, his medical training kicked in.

"Compound fracture of the tibia," Vance announced quietly, cutting away the leg of Clara’s trousers with heavy trauma shears. "Three broken ribs on her left side, severe concussion, and deep lacerations. She needs morphine, Arthur. Now. Before I set this bone."

"Do it," Arthur ordered, sitting on the edge of his desk, his blood-stained white shirt stark against the dim lighting of the room. He refused to leave the room, ignoring Vance’s gentle suggestions that he wait outside. "Give her whatever she needs for the pain, but keep her conscious enough to talk if she can."

"I don't need morphine to talk," Clara gasped from the leather sofa where Arthur had placed her. The preliminary dose of painkillers was already hazing her mind, but her stubborn intellect fought against the fog. "Arthur... listen to me."

Arthur knelt by the head of the couch, taking her cold hand in both of his. "I'm listening, Clara."

"It was... an inside job," she whispered, her words slightly slurred from the shock and medication. "The alley behind the garage was dark. The security cameras were offline."

"The cameras in that lot are managed by our private security firm," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing. "Tommy runs that detail."

"Tommy..." Clara breathed, squeezing his fingers with whatever strength she had left. "He was supposed to meet me at the elevator. He wasn't there. When the two men came out of the shadows, they didn't look like muggers. They were professional. They moved like soldiers."

Arthur turned his head slightly toward the door, where his second-in-command, a towering, scarred man named Frank Rossi, stood watching with a expression carved of granite.

"Frank," Arthur said softly.

"Boss?"

"Find Tommy. Don't call him. Don't send a text. Take four men, go to his apartment in Southie, and bring him here. Alive. I want him breathing when he answers my questions."

Frank nodded once and vanished through the heavy oak doors without a word.

Dr. Vance finished splinting Clara’s leg, injecting a powerful anti-inflammatory directly into her thigh. "She needs a hospital, Arthur. I've stabilized the fracture and stopped the internal bleeding as best I can here, but she needs surgery and clean steel to pin that bone."

"She stays here tonight," Arthur replied coldly. "My private medical floor at the St. Jude building is prepared. Set up the suite there. No records, no municipal police reports, no admissions logs. If whoever did this finds out she survived, they’ll come to finish the job."

Clara looked up at him through heavy eyelids. "The drive... Arthur, if they breach the encryption..."

"It takes a military-grade supercomputer three weeks to crack that cipher," Arthur said, brushing his thumb across her knuckles. "And they won't have three weeks. They won't even have three days."

"You don't understand," Clara insisted, fighting the rising tide of morphine. "It's not just your money... I put... I put my personal ledger on that drive."

Arthur froze. "Your personal ledger?"

"The shadow books," she whispered, her head tilting back into the pillow. "The ones I kept... just in case you ever tried to eliminate me... like you did the last accountant."

The room grew so silent that the hum of the city traffic ten floors below sounded like thunder. Dr. Vance hurriedly packed his instruments, terrified to be present for what sounded like a fatal confession.

Arthur didn't move. He didn't pull his hand away. He simply stared down at her, his expression unreadable.

"You kept a ledger to protect yourself from me?" he asked softly.

"Two years ago... when I started..." Clara admitted, tears of pain and exhaustion slipping down her pale cheeks. "I didn't know you then, Arthur. I thought you were just another butcher. I kept names, dates, offshore bank accounts... every bribe, every wire transfer... If that drive is decrypted, it won't just destroy your empire... it will send you, me, and fifty other people to federal prison for the rest of our lives."

Arthur looked at her for a long, heavy moment. Then, to Clara’s complete shock, the faint shadow of a smile touched his lips. It was a cold, dangerous smile, but there was a strange, twisted genuine affection in it.

"You really are the smartest woman I've ever met," Arthur murmured, bending down until his lips were inches from her ear. "You prepared a trap for me before you even knew me."

"Are you... going to kill me?" she rasped softly.

Arthur leaned down and pressed a firm, lingering kiss against her blood-stained forehead. "I'm going to tear this city apart to get your ledger back, Clara. And when I do, I'm going to make you burn it yourself."

He stood up, turning to Dr. Vance. "Move her to the St. Jude suite. Put four armed men inside the room and six in the hallway. If anyone without my personal security clearance comes within ten feet of her door, put a bullet in their head."

As the medical team carefully lifted Clara onto a portable gurney, Arthur walked over to his desk, opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out a heavy, dark steel Colt .45. He checked the magazine with a sharp, mechanical click and slid it into his shoulder holster.

The door opened, and Frank Rossi re-entered the room. His coat was damp with snow, and his knuckles were scraped raw.

"We found Tommy," Frank said quietly.

Arthur didn't look up from his desk. "Where?"

"In his apartment. He was packing a bag. Had fifty thousand dollars in cash on his kitchen table and a one-way ticket to Miami."

Arthur took his coat—a clean one, fresh from the wardrobe in his private dressing room—and slid his arms into the sleeves.

"Is he down in the basement?" Arthur asked.

May you like

"Tied to a chair," Frank confirmed.

Arthur adjusted his cuffs, his face an emotionless mask of killer precision. "Let's go talk to Tommy."
