Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Room

One year later.
The Halcyon Grand was once again filled with the hum of string quartets, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the dazzling reflections of three hundred wealthy patrons gathered for the annual Winter Gala.
Diamonds flashed. Emeralds gleamed. Men in immaculate tuxedos laughed at jokes they didn't find funny, and women in satin gowns traded gossip with practiced smiles.
Near the east terrace doors, Dante Cavalari stood with a glass of champagne in his hand. Beside him stood Finn Mercer, walking without the slightest trace of a limp, his eyes calmly scanning the crowd.
“It’s quiet tonight,” Finn remarked softly.
“It’s never quiet, Finn,” Dante replied, taking a small sip of his drink. “It’s just controlled.”
At the far end of the room, near the main entrance, the heavy mahogany doors opened.
A woman walked in.
She wore a long, sweeping gown of deep emerald silk. Around her neck sat a delicate, breathtaking collar of polished black platinum—dark, unreflective, absorbing every ray of light thrown off by the massive crystal chandeliers above. It was a masterpiece of design: bold, elegant, and totally devoid of sparkle.
Every eye in the room turned toward her, mesmerized by the silent power of her presence.
It was Mara Vale.
She didn't look at the crowd. She didn't look at the jewels or the tuxedos.
Her gray-green eyes swept the ballroom with practiced precision.
Main entrance: clear. Kitchen corridor: clear. Service elevator: secure. Terrace: open.
Four exits in less than two seconds.
Then her eyes found Dante standing by the terrace doors.
A tiny, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of her lips. She crossed the ballroom with a fluid, effortless grace, the crowd parting naturally before her like water around the prow of a ship.
She stopped beside Dante, leaning her shoulder lightly against his.
“You’re late,” Dante said softly, not taking his eyes off the room.
“I was reviewing the perimeter security on the roof,” Mara replied, her voice smooth and dry. “Your team was three seconds slow on the north rotation.”
“I’ll double their training hours tomorrow,” Dante said, his heart beating with a steady, deep rhythm that he hadn't felt in years.
Mara lifted her glass of water, touching it gently against his champagne flute. The clear sound of glass ringing echoed softly between them.
“No jewelry tonight?” Dante whispered, his eyes drifting down to the black platinum collar at her throat.
Mara looked up at him, her gray-green eyes burning with a quiet, fierce intelligence that illuminated the dark ballroom better than a thousand chandeliers ever could.
“I brought something better,” she said softly.
“What’s that?”
May you like
“A room where no one gets taken by surprise.”
Dante smiled, reaching down to take her hand in his, their fingers intertwining securely in the shadows of the terrace door. Outside, the rain began to fall over the city, soft and steady, washing away the dirt of the past, while inside, the room remained unbroken.
