Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon (Epilogue)

Three years after the burn.

The summer sun was setting over the quiet mountain lake in upstate New York, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, fiery orange, and soft rose gold.

I sat on the timber deck of my private lake house, holding a warm cup of herbal tea, watching the calm water lap gently against the wooden dock below.

Beside me lay my golden retriever, Leo, resting his chin comfortably across my feet.

The silence of the forest was pure, unbroken, and filled with the scent of wild pine and cool water. There were no shouting voices, no breaking glass, no ringing emergency phones, and no heavy shadows of fear lurking in the corners of the room.

My phone, resting on the small wooden table beside my chair, lit up with a notification from Detective Mara Chen:

Elise, just wanted to let you know: Julian’s early parole request was formally denied by the board this morning. He will serve his full nine years. Thought you’d like to know.

I looked at the message for a moment, felt a brief, distant ripple of memory, and set the phone back down on the table.

It didn't trigger any pain. It didn't make my heart race.

Julian Rooke was a distant, fading footnote in a story that had long since moved past him. He was sitting in a gray cell in upstate New York, while I was sitting on the deck of a paradise I had built with my own mind, my own resources, and my own unyielding spirit.

I looked down at my right hand, resting on the arm of my chair.

The scar was almost invisible now—just a thin, silver line running across the soft skin of my palm.

I closed my hand into a strong, firm fist, feeling the full strength of my muscles, the clear blood flowing through my veins, and the absolute, unshakeable freedom that belonged entirely to me.

I took a deep breath of the cool mountain air, leaned back in my chair, and watched the stars come out one by one over the silent lake.

The burn had healed. The house had fallen.

And the woman who survived was finally, completely home.
