Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The grand ballroom was a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and high-society elite.

The moment Cassian and I walked inside, the hum of five hundred conversations died down to a sharp, collective gasp. All eyes swept across my navy gown, my diamonds, and the serene, radiant confidence on my face.

Standing near the main stage, Senator Vance and Julianna froze, their champagne glasses hovering halfway to their lips.

Julianna’s face turned bright red with fury. She immediately handed her glass to a waiter and marched across the polished parquet floor directly toward us, her father trailing closely behind her.

“Cassian!” Senator Vance boomed, trying to maintain an air of political authority. “What is the meaning of this spectacle? Bringing a domestic servant to a federal maritime summit?”

Cassian stepped forward half an inch, placing his body partially between me and the Senator, his expression dropping into a lethal mask of quiet authority.

“Watch your tongue, Senator,” Cassian warned, his voice low enough to make the surrounding guests shiver. “You are speaking to the future matriarch of the Rowe estate.”

Julianna let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh. “Future matriarch?! Cassian, she was scrubbing toilets at Meridian Tower six weeks ago! Do you honestly think the board will accept a street-rat’s child as the legal heir to a fifty-billion-dollar maritime monopoly?!”

The surrounding crowd gasped, dozens of guests pulling out phones to record the interaction.

I didn't step behind Cassian.

Instead, I stepped right beside him, holding my chin high, looking Julianna straight in her venomous eyes.

“My father worked thirty years in an Ohio steel mill, Miss Vance,” I said, my voice ringing out clear, steady, and melodious through the quiet circle of onlookers. “He taught me that dignity isn't bought with inherited blood money or offshore tax shelters. It’s built with hard work and integrity.”

I took a step closer to her, my navy gown rustling softly.

“I cleaned floors at Meridian Tower because I paid my own way through college without a senator father to buy my grades,” I continued smoothly. “And if you think this baby is just a bargaining chip for a trust fund, you are wildly mistaken. This child is loved by two parents who will burn your father’s fraudulent shipping empire to the ground if you ever threaten our family again.”

Absolute silence fell over the room.

Julianna’s mouth opened and closed like a landed fish. Senator Vance looked as though he had been slapped across the face with a frozen gauntlet.

From the back of the room, an elderly man with silver hair and a sharp navy tuxedo began to clap slowly.

It was Arthur Montgomery—the chairman of the Rowe Global Executive Board.

“Bravo, my dear,” Arthur Montgomery declared, walking through the crowd and bowing his head politely toward me. “That was the finest speech delivered in this ballroom in twenty years.”

He turned to Cassian, grinning warmly. “The board’s confidence is fully restored, Cassian. Bring your lovely bride to the head table.”
