Chapter 8 - Reunion in the Shadows

“I’m walking, Julian,” I said, my voice thick with emotion as I shoved Vance hard onto the concrete floor of the lab.

Marcus immediately stepped forward, pinning Vance to the ground with a heavy boot on his spine, securing his hands with heavy-duty tactical cuffs.

I rushed to the central control terminal beside the containment cells. Using Vance’s security clearance pass that I ripped from his coat, I swiped the keycard through the master override console.

The magnetic seals on both glass cells released with a loud chime.

The heavy glass doors slid open.

Julian stumbled out of his cell, his frame thin, exhausted, wearing a torn grey jumpsuit. He looked at my legs, then up at my face, tears carving clean streaks through the dust on his cheeks.

He threw his arms around me, pulling me into a fierce, desperate hug.

“He found you,” Julian sobbed against my shoulder. “My God, Charles... Leo actually found you...”

“He found me, Julian,” I murmured, holding my younger brother tight, feeling the frailness of his ribs beneath his shirt. “He saved my life. He’s safe. He’s at my house right now, eating fresh food and sleeping in a real bed.”

Clara stepped weakly out of her cell, supported by Julian as he turned to hold her. She looked at me with wide, tear-filled eyes—the mother of the boy who had performed a miracle in a Manhattan ballroom.

“Is he hurt?” Clara asked, her voice raspy from weeks of captivity. “Did Vance’s men touch him?”

“He has a few bruises, but he is completely safe,” I assured her gently, taking her bandaged hands in mine. “My personal doctor examined him hours ago. He is sleeping peacefully.”

On the floor, Vance let out a cruel, breathless laugh, his face pressed against the cold concrete beneath Marcus’s boot.

“You think you’ve won, Charles?” Vance hissed, spitting blood onto the floor. “Look around you! This facility is backed by three international pharmaceutical conglomerates! The data from your brother’s blood is already mirrored on servers in Geneva! You can't erase what we’ve discovered!”

I walked over to Vance, looking down at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt.

“I don't need to erase the data, Richard,” I said quietly. “I just need to control the narrative.”

I pulled my encrypted satellite phone from my pocket and dialed a direct line to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation—a man whose presidential campaign I had personally financed three years ago.

“Director Miller,” I said into the phone, my voice steady and commanding. “This is Charles Whitmore. I am currently standing inside an illegal, unregistered biological research lab at the 14th Street Iron Works.”

There was a sudden, chaotic pause on the other end of the line.

“Charles?” Miller gasped. “Where have you been? The news networks are losing their minds—they’re saying you stood up at the Plaza!”

“I am standing, Director,” I said cold-bloodedly. “And I have Senator Richard Vance held at gunpoint beneath the East River. He has been running a human trafficking and illegal genetic experimentation ring out of this facility for ten years. Bring federal agents, a hazmat team, and the press. Now.”
