Chapter 6 - Breach and Clear

The electronic jammer detonated its signal burst at precisely 0412 hours.

Instantly, every wireless camera feed across the twelve-acre estate froze, displaying static on the security monitors inside the main guardhouse. The handheld radios carried by the roving guards emitted a high-pitched, screeching squeal before dying completely.

"What the hell?" a guard inside the security shack swore, slapping his radio against his palm. "Base to Mobile One, report! Our comms are down!"

Before the guard could step out of the shack, the high-voltage electrical transformer mounted on a pole near the north gate exploded in a shower of bright blue sparks.

Daniel had used a captured 300 Blackout incendiary round to puncture the transformer’s cooling tank, causing an immediate, catastrophic short circuit.

The entire compound was instantly plunged into pitch blackness.

The security lights killed out, the automatic gates froze in place, and the sharp, piercing wail of backup emergency generators began to hum from the basement of the main house.

"PUNCH IN!" Daniel yelled softly.

Using a pair of heavy wire cutters, Daniel snipped through the inner chain-link mesh near the service entrance, creating an opening eighteen inches wide.

Ranger slithered through first, his dark body low to the ground, scanning the open gravel yard behind the stone barn.

Daniel followed, slipping through the gap, his Sig Sauer P226 held in a two-handed combat grip, his night-vision goggles flipped down over his eyes.

The world turned into a bright, monochrome green landscape.

Two contractors came running around the corner of the stone barn, carrying flashlights and handguns, shouting confused orders at each other in the dark.

"I can't reach Hale!" one screamed. "The cell tower is down too!"

Ranger didn't wait for an order.

He charged silently across the gravel yard, his padded paws making no sound, lunging at the lead contractor from the side. He hit the man full in the chest, his teeth clamping onto the contractor’s forearms, pinning his weapon arm to his body as they crashed into a stack of wooden pallets.

Daniel stepped forward, firing two swift, silenced rounds into the second contractor's chest.

TAP-TAP.

The second man collapsed without a sound.

Daniel stepped over to the first contractor, who was struggling frantically under Ranger’s crushing grip. Daniel pressed the cold muzzle of his Sig Sauer against the contractor’s temple.

"Where is Hale's office?" Daniel demanded, his voice devoid of human warmth. "Speak once. Speak truth. Or I let the dog have your throat."

The contractor, weeping with fear, pointed a trembling finger toward the basement doors of the stone manor house. "In... in the wine cellar! It's a reinforced bunker... they're wiping the servers right now!"

"Thank you," Daniel said.

He struck the man behind the ear with the heavy aluminum butt of his pistol, rendering him unconscious.

"Ranger, heel!"

They left the gravel yard, sprinting low along the stone foundation of the main house, heading straight for the basement access doors.

The iron doors were heavy, fitted with an electronic keypad lock. But without main power, the electronic magnetic lock had defaulted to its fail-secure mode, requiring a physical key or an explosive breach.

Daniel pulled a small, flexible strip of C4 explosive from his tactical pouch—a souvenir he had retrieved from the contractor’s SUV in Richmond—and pressed it firmly into the door frame near the heavy steel deadbolt.

He inserted a short three-second delay friction fuse.

"Cover!" Daniel yelled, pulling Ranger behind a thick stone buttress.

He pulled the fuse igniter.

SPARK.

Three seconds passed.

BOOM!

The sharp, concussive blast blew the steel deadbolt straight out of the frame, throwing the heavy iron doors inward with a shower of twisted metal and grey smoke.

Daniel pushed through the smoke before the dust could settle, his gun raised, Ranger right at his knee.

They stepped down into the subterranean hallway of the wine cellar.

The corridor was lit only by the red emergency backup lights, casting long, bloody shadows against the stone walls. At the far end of the hallway, behind a thick pane of bulletproof glass, was Victor Hale’s master server room.

Inside, Victor Hale was frantically pulling black hard drives from a server rack, shoving them into his leather briefcase.

Standing beside him, holding a small silver handgun with hands that were shaking so violently he could barely hold the grip, was Ethan Caldwell.
