Chapter 6 - THE AFTERMATH OF A KISS

The kiss lasted less than three seconds.

It wasn't a rehearsed, romantic gesture meant for a silver screen. It was firm, possessive, and absolute—a public execution of his old life and an unmistakable declaration of his new reality.

When Adrien pulled back, his gray eyes were locked onto Maya’s. Her lips were slightly parted, her cheeks flushed, her chest heaving as she tried to process the electric shock that had just ripped through her entire body.

Down on the floor, someone dropped a glass of champagne. It shattered against the marble with a sound like a rifle shot.

Then Vanessa Sinclair screamed.

It was not the refined, polite gasp of a high-society heiress. It was a raw, primal shriek of pure, unadulterated humiliation that echoed off the high plaster ceiling, cutting through the stunned silence of the ballroom.

“You bastard!” she shrieked, lunging at Adrien with her manicured nails extended.

Marcus, the estate’s lead security officer, stepped out from the balcony service door and caught Vanessa’s arms firmly, pinning them behind her back before she could touch Adrien.

“Get your hands off me!” she screamed, struggling against the guard’s grip, her beautiful ivory dress twisting around her legs. “Do you know who I am? My father will ruin you! He will destroy Whitmore Holdings by morning!”

“Your father is currently being detained in the VIP lounge by federal marshals, Miss Sinclair,” Marcus said calmly, his voice recorded clearly by the overhead media microphones. “They arrived ten minutes ago with a warrant for wire fraud and interstate conspiracy.”

Vanessa’s rage vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, cold terror. She stopped struggling, her body going completely limp against the guard’s arms.

On the balcony floor, Julian Vance tried to crawl toward the service exit.

Adrien didn't even look down as he raised his right foot and set it firmly on the hem of Julian’s trousers, pinning the lawyer to the floor.

“Where are you going, Julian?” Adrien asked softly. “The board meeting isn't until nine tomorrow. I thought you wanted to discuss the Norfolk leases.”

Julian turned his head, his face pressed against the dark wood of the floorboards, his eyes filled with tears of defeat. “Adrien... please... we were brothers...”

“Brothers don't forge signatures, Julian,” Adrien said, his voice flat and cold. “Marcus, hand Mr. Vance to the state police waiting in the driveway.”

Two heavy-set security guards pulled Julian to his feet, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists before leading him away through the double doors.

The ballroom below was now an absolute madhouse. Guests were pushing toward the exit, reporters were broadcasting live into their camera phones, and board members were screaming into their cellphones, attempting to order emergency halts on their stock trading accounts.

Adrien turned back to Maya.

He reached out, taking her hand in his. Her fingers were still ice-cold.

“Come with me,” he said softly.

“Mr. Whitmore—” she began, her voice trembling.

“Adrien,” he corrected firmly, pulling her toward the private service elevator behind the balcony. “My name is Adrien. And we are leaving.”

He didn't wait for her to answer. He kept his hand firmly clasped around hers, pulling her into the small elevator car, pressing the button for the top floor master private residence.

As the heavy brass doors slid shut, cutting off the deafening noise of the chaotic ballroom below, Maya leaned her back against the elevator wall, her legs trembling so violently she thought she might collapse.

Adrien stood beside her, his breath coming in long, heavy cycles. He reached up, tore his unbuttoned collar completely open, and threw his vest onto the floor of the elevator.

“Are you alright?” he asked, looking down at her with intense concern.

Maya looked up at him, her dark eyes wide. “Did you just... did you just kiss me in front of the entire East Coast press?”

Adrien let out a low, breathy laugh—a real, genuine laugh that transformed his harsh, angular face into something blindingly handsome.

“I believe I did,” he said softly.

“They are going to ruin you,” Maya whispered, her hand rising to touch her own lips, which still burned from the pressure of his mouth. “The newspapers... the stock market tomorrow morning... they will call you crazy. They will call me an opportunist.”

Adrien stepped closer to her, closing the distance in the small space of the elevator car. He reached out, his warm, large hands cupping both sides of her face, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.

“Let them call me crazy,” Adrien said softly, his thumbs gently wiping away two small tears that had leaked from her eyes. “For the first time in six years, I am free. And no one in that room will ever touch you or your mother again. I swear it on my life.”

The elevator chimed softly as it reached the top floor.
