Chapter 5 - The Masterclass of Downfall

Sabina’s brain scrambled to process the scene before her. The transition from supreme control to total exposure was so sudden that her physiological response lagged behind her intellect. Her chest heaved, her lips parted, and for three long seconds, the grand manipulator of the Prescott estate was reduced to a speechless, trembling ghost.
Then, the survival instincts of a professional con artist reasserted themselves.
The coldness melted from her face instantly. Her eyes filled with well-practiced tears, her lower lip trembled with delicate vulnerability, and she took a frantic step forward, her hands clutching her chest.
"Chadworth!" she cried, her voice trembling with tragic relief. "Oh my god, Chadworth! You... you didn't fly to Canada? I... I was so worried! Someone broke into the secondary security network this morning—I thought someone was trying to target you! I came up here to secure your private files!"
Chadworth did not move. He did not blink. He simply stared at her with a look of terrifying, absolute detachment.
"Save your breath, Sabina," Chadworth said softly. The utter lack of anger in his tone was far more terrifying than a shout. "The microphones in this room are active. The hidden cameras in the living room, the breakfast nook, and the service corridors have been recording since six o'clock yesterday morning."
Sabina’s tears froze on her cheeks. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin a waxy, sickly white.
"You..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "You were watching?"
"Every second," Chadworth replied. He reached forward and tapped a key on his executive console. A large, wall-mounted display screen behind him flickered to life.
On the screen, a high-definition video began to play. It showed Sabina in the living room from just hours before—snatching Gemma’s stuffed rabbit, towering over the terrified child, and threatening Rosamund with the destruction of her sister’s medical scholarship.
Audio filled the room, crystalline and merciless: “Who do you think he’ll believe? A girl from the slums with a dead mother, or his future wife?”
The two state investigators standing behind Chadworth did not flinch; they had already reviewed the footage in the bunker. Their eyes were fixed on Sabina with cold, professional disdain.
Sabina backed away toward the open doorway, her hand reaching blindly behind her for the frame. "That... that’s manipulated. It’s an AI deepfake! Rosamund set this up—she’s been trying to frame me, Chadworth! You know how jealous she is of my position!"
"I also have the audio from your call to Julian Vance six minutes ago," Chadworth continued, his voice remaining terrifyingly level. "Where you discussed duplicating my biometric keys, draining my offshore accounts in Zurich, and distributing the assets through Panama."
Sabina’s back hit the doorframe. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps.
"Arthur," Chadworth said quietly.
From the hallway behind Sabina, Arthur stepped out of the shadows, accompanied by two armed private security contractors. Sabina whipped around, realizing her escape route was completely blocked.
"Julian Vance was taken into custody by federal agents at his office in Manhattan twelve minutes ago," Arthur reported smoothly, checking an encrypted tablet. "When the federal authorities executed the warrant on his primary servers, they seized the unencrypted communications log between his device and yours, Miss Vance."
Chadworth raised an eyebrow. "Vance? Ah. So Sabina isn't your real name either."
The woman standing in the doorway seemed to collapse inward. The delicate, elegant persona she had cultivated for nearly two years shattered completely, exposing the ruthless, desperate operative beneath. Her posture hardened, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure, unadulterated venom.
"You arrogant, wealthy old bastard," Sabina spat, abandoning all pretense of innocence. "You think you’re so smart? You spent every day running your empire while your useless little daughters sat upstairs rot in this empty mausoleum! You didn't give a damn about them until I gave you a reason to look!"
Chadworth slowly stood up from behind his desk. He was a tall man, imposing and built with the silent authority of someone who commanded thousands of lives with a single signature. As he stepped out from behind the desk, Sabina involuntarily shrank back against Arthur’s guards.
"You are correct about one thing, Sabina," Chadworth said, stopping three feet away from her. "I was blind. I was foolish enough to believe that a woman who claimed to love me would care for my children. I allowed my ambition and my grief to distract me from the only responsibility that truly mattered."
He looked down at her, his eyes burning with an unforgiving, ancient coldness.
"But my blindness ends today. Yours, however, is just beginning."
He turned to the state investigators. "Detective Miller, she is all yours. Charges include grand larceny, corporate espionage, extortion, child endangerment, and illegal wiretapping. Ensure bail is contested on the grounds of extreme flight risk."
"With pleasure, Mr. Prescott," the lead detective said, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs.
Sabina thrashed against the officer's grip as the cold metal clicked around her wrists. "You can't do this to me! I know people in the district attorney’s office! Chadworth, you fool! You’ll be ruined when the press gets hold of this!"
"The press already has the press release, Sabina," Chadworth said quietly, turning his back on her. "And it focuses entirely on the grand indictment of Julian Vance’s criminal syndicate. You won't even be a footnote in the financial papers. You will simply be a convict."
The officers pulled the screaming, furious woman down the long hallway, her designer heels dragging uselessly against the polished floorboards. Her shrieks echoed through the grand house, fading slowly as she was led down the service elevator toward the waiting police cruisers in the rear courtyard.
Silence reclaimed the grand study.
Chadworth stood alone in the center of the room for a long moment, the quiet weight of the mansion settling over him like a shroud. He looked at his hands—hands that had built an empire, yet had failed to shield his own daughters from emotional terror inside their own home.
Arthur stepped into the doorway, his face expressionless. "She’s off the property, sir. Police transport is en route to the precinct."
"Where are my daughters?" Chadworth asked, his voice cracking slightly for the first time.
May you like
"They are in the east library with Rosamund, sir," Arthur replied softly. "They haven't heard any of this."
Chadworth took a deep breath, adjusted his suit jacket, and walked out into the corridor. "It's time to go home."
