Chapter 4 - The Suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel

At 4:45 a.m., the air inside Suite 402 of the Beverly Hills Hotel smelled of expensive perfume, leather luggage, and stale gin.
Vanessa Hart stood before a full-length gilded mirror, rapidly sliding thick stacks of bearer bonds and foreign currency into a sleek leather duffel bag. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight, professional knot, and she had replaced her evening gown with a dark grey pantsuit.
Her hands were steady, but her teeth were clenched so tightly her jaw ached.
"Idiots," she spat under her breath, glancing at her phone on the marble nightstand. "Three men couldn't handle one housekeeper and a child."
She snapped the lock on the first suitcase, grabbing her passport from the dressing table. On the page, her face was stamped beneath the name Claire Vance—a secondary identity complete with full diplomatic immunity papers issued through a corrupt consulate in South America.
She reached for the handle of her duffel bag just as a quiet, rhythmic knock sounded against the wooden suite door.
Two soft taps. A pause. One heavy tap.
Vanessa froze.
It was the signal code used by her security team.
Relief washed over her face. She smoothed her jacket, walked across the plush carpet, and slid the heavy brass latch open.
"Did you secure the boy—"
The door was kicked inward with catastrophic force.
The solid mahogany frame exploded off its hinges, striking Vanessa square in the chest and throwing her backward onto the carpet. She landed hard on her hip, gasping for air, her leather bag spilling crisp hundred-dollar bills across the floor.
Before she could reach into her coat for her small pistol, a heavy polished shoe stepped directly onto her wrist, pinning her arm to the floor with crushing precision.
Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with shock.
Standing over her was not her security team.
It was Daniel Whitmore.
He wasn't wearing his silk robe anymore. He wore a dark tailored suit, his white shirt open at the collar, his dark eyes entirely devoid of the gentle, easygoing affection she had manipulated for two long years.
Beside him stood Jonathan Mercer, accompanied by two LAPD detectives and two federal agents carrying formal arrest warrants.
"Daniel!" Vanessa gasped, her voice instantly shifting into that sweet, helpless tone she had perfected. "Thank God you're here! Men broke into my room! They forced me to pack—"
"Save it, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice as cold as deep ice. He didn't lift his shoe from her wrist, applying just enough pressure to keep her immobilized without breaking the bone. "I just came from East LA. Noah is safe. Maria is awake. And the federal agents standing behind me have full access to your mother's off-shore accounts in Grand Cayman."
Vanessa’s sweet expression evaporated instantly.
The soft, romantic woman Daniel had intended to marry vanished, replaced by a cold, sneering venom that transformed her entire face.
"You stupid, spineless rich boy," Vanessa spat, trying to pull her wrist free. "You think you're clever? You think you solved something? You don't know half of what your family did!"
"I know enough," Daniel replied smoothly. "I know about the forty million dollars in fraudulent debt my father created. I know about your mother's fake notary seals. And I know you threw a fifty-year-old woman into a glass mirror because she tried to stop you from kidnapping a seven-year-old child."
"Your father was a monster, Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings of the suite. "He ruined my family! He bankrupted my father's firm and drove him to shoot himself in his office! Everything I took from Whitmore Holdings was what your family owed me!"
"And Andrew?" Daniel asked, leaning down slightly, his face inches from hers. "What did Andrew owe you?"
Vanessa let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Andrew was a coward. He found out what his father did and ran away like a frightened dog! He left you to take the fall! He left his little maid to suffer in silence while he hid in Pasadena!"
"Where is he, Vanessa?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Where is my brother?"
Vanessa sneered, her eyes glittering with dark satisfaction. "Find him yourself, Daniel. But you better hurry... because when my mother realizes I've been taken, the secondary protocol triggers. And Andrew's current hiding place won't stay secret for another twenty-four hours."
The federal agents stepped forward, pulling Vanessa to her feet and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
As she was led out into the hallway, screaming threats in three different languages, Jonathan Mercer stepped up beside Daniel, picking up a small black encrypted tablet that had spilled from Vanessa’s leather bag.
Jonathan tapped the glass, his sharp eyes scanning through lines of routed IP addresses and cellular tracking data.
"She wasn't lying about the secondary protocol, Daniel," Jonathan noted calmly. "There is an active tracking ping being routed through a server in Seattle. It's locked onto a private cell signal located in a small fishing town on Vancouver Island."

Daniel looked at the screen, watching the little red dot pulse against the map of British Columbia.
"Get your plane ready, Jonathan," Daniel said, turning toward the door. "We're going to Canada."
