Chapter 10 - The Foundation

By midnight, the storm had cleared, leaving the Manhattan sky crisp and starry.

Dominic Romano and seven of his top associates were arrested at JFK Airport as they attempted to board a private jet to South America. The evidence Elena had gathered from the Fairview site—along with digital records Vance had seized from Dominic’s private servers—was enough to lock them away for federal fraud, attempted murder, and corporate racketeering for the rest of their lives.

In the executive office on the sixty-eighth floor of the Romano Tower, the lights were dimmed.

Elena stood by the massive glass window, looking out at the glittering lights of the city. She wore a black suit now—a tailored, professional outfit that belonged to her new life as the official Vice President of Structural Oversight for Romano Enterprises.

Her mother had been discharged from the hospital that morning, fully stabilized, moving into a ground-floor apartment near Central Park that Vance had purchased for her family.

The heavy oak door opened softly.

Vance walked into the office. He didn't look like a feared mafia boss tonight. He looked like a man who had finally put down a heavy burden he had been carrying for years.

He walked over to the window, stopping beside her, staring at the skyline.

“Dominic’s trial starts next month,” Vance said quietly. “The syndicate elders have surrendered all their voting rights to me. The business is clean now, Elena. Every contract, every site, every building. No more skimmed budgets. No more fake concrete.”

“Good,” Elena said, turning her head to look at him. “Because I would have reported you if there were.”

Vance let out a soft, genuine laugh—a sound that filled the quiet office with warmth.

“I know you would have,” Vance said softly. He turned his body toward her, looking down into her dark eyes. “My mother asked me a question this morning.”

“What did she ask?”

“She asked me why I gave a girl from Queens an executive office, a corporate security detail, and complete authority over my family’s fortune.”

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “And what did you tell her?”

Vance reached out, his long fingers gently touching her chin, leaning close enough that she could feel the warm breath against her skin.

“I told her that a hundred years of money and power couldn't build a strong foundation,” Vance whispered, his eyes filled with an intensity that made her breath catch. “I told her I needed someone who knows how to look up when everyone else is looking down.”

Elena looked into his eyes, feeling the steady, unwavering strength beneath his words—a strength that wasn't built on fear or leverage, but on trust.

“And what about the health insurance?” Elena asked softly, a tiny, teasing smile breaking across her lips.

Vance smiled back, his hand moving to gently hold her cheek as he leaned down.

“It’s lifetime coverage,” Vance murmured, just before his lips touched hers. “And non-negotiable.”

Out beyond the glass, the lights of Manhattan burned bright and steady, anchored to foundations that were finally strong enough to stand the test of time.
