Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three months later, high in the crisp, pristine air of the Swiss Alps, the world felt a million miles away from the blood-soaked corridors of the city estate. The chalet was all warm pine, roaring stone fireplaces, and massive glass windows looking out over snow-capped peaks that pierced a brilliant blue sky. There were no armed guards patrolling the hallways in tactical gear, only a quiet, peaceful security detail stationed quietly at the outer perimeter. Lily was sitting on the polished wooden floorboards of the sunroom, happily coloring in a massive coloring book with a pack of brand-new, organic crayons, completely oblivious to the empire her father was quietly dismantling and reorganizing from a mahogany desk in the corner. Norah stood by the kitchen counter, sipping warm herbal tea, watching the sunlight dance across the wooden table. Her body was heavy, full-term, and ready. The baby had been kicking a relentless rhythm against her ribs all morning, a healthy, stubborn little boy who clearly inherited his father’s relentless energy.

The front door opened softly. Cold winter air drifted into the hallway, followed by the familiar, comforting scent of pine and melting snow. Dominic walked into the kitchen. He wore a heavy wool sweater instead of a tailored suit, his hair slightly dusted with fresh snowflakes. He looked lighter, the haunted, paranoid shadow that used to define his every movement replaced by a quiet, steady resolve. He had spent the last three months cutting ties with international syndicates, handing off the violent operations to trusted lieutenants, and pivoting the family’s wealth entirely into legitimate real estate and international shipping. He walked straight up to Norah, wrapping his arms gently around her waist from behind, pressing his face into the crook of her neck. He placed a large, warm palm flat against her swollen belly. Instantly, as if recognizing its father’s touch, the baby gave a sharp, definitive kick right against Dominic’s hand. Dominic let out a low, rumbling chuckle, his shoulders relaxing completely. “He’s definitely a Russo,” Dominic murmured against her skin. “Stubborn, active, and completely uncooperative.”

Norah leaned back against his chest, closing her eyes as she let herself sink into the safety of his embrace. The fear that had consumed her months ago inside that cold marble kitchen in the city had finally dissolved into nothingness. She wasn't hiding anymore. She wasn't running. “Dr. Vance is on standby in Zurich,” Dominic whispered softly, turning her around so he could look into her eyes. His slate-gray gaze was filled with a profound, unshakeable tenderness. “Are you ready?” Norah placed her hands on his chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart beneath the wool. She looked past him into the sunlit room where Lily was humming a happy little tune to herself, and then out toward the endless, magnificent expanse of the snowy mountains. The past was buried in blood and fire. But the future was right here, waiting to be born. “I’m ready,” Norah smiled, and for the first time in her life, she meant it with all her heart.
