Chapter 6 - The Sister's Dilemma

The private medical suite on the fourth floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was quiet, save for the hum of the heart rate monitor and the soft rustle of paper charts.
Dr. Elena Morgan stood by the window of her private office, staring down at the medical file resting on her desk. The file bore a red confidential tag: Sophia Bennett Morgan — Patient ID 40992.
Elena’s face was etched with exhaustion. She hadn't slept more than two hours the previous night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw two conflicting images: her brother Luke, the fierce, uncompromising protector of their family legacy, and Sophia, the quiet, resolute woman who had stood in her examination room with unyielding fire in her eyes.
The heavy mahogany door to her office slammed open without a knock.
Elena jumped, dropping her pen as Luke strode into the room, looking like an absolute storm. He was still wearing his tailored charcoal suit from the office, his tie loosened slightly at his throat, his hair unusually disheveled. His jaw was set in a tight, furious line, his hazel eyes burning with a dark, tempestuous energy.
Behind him, two of his high-ranking private security guards stood discreetly in the hallway, closing the office door to grant them privacy.
"Luke?" Elena gasped, taking a step back toward her desk. "What are you doing here? You can't just storm into my medical offices like this—"
"She left me," Luke said, his voice flat, brutal, and vibrating with rage. He walked over to her desk, leaning his heavy hands against the wood, looming over her. "Sophia filed for divorce yesterday. She packed her bags and vanished into thin air."
Elena swallowed hard, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She forced her expression to remain neutral, adopting the clinical mask she had spent years perfecting.
"I... I heard, Luke," Elena whispered softly. "Mother called me last night, frantic. She told me what happened at the house."
"Do you know where she is?" Luke demanded, his eyes searching his sister’s face with terrifying intensity. "She isn't at her office downtown. She isn't at any of her usual client sites. Her attorney refuses to disclose her physical location, citing safety concerns! Safety concerns! As if I would ever hurt her!"
"Luke, calm down—"
"I am not going to calm down!" Luke roared, slamming a fist onto the desk, causing the medical folders to jump. "She walked out on me, Elena! She stood there on the phone and told me she doesn't love me! She told me she doesn't need a single dollar of my money! She has been quietly running a multi-million-dollar corporation behind my back for three years while playing the sweet, harmless wife!"
Elena closed her eyes briefly, taking a slow, steadying breath. "Sophia was never just a 'harmless wife', Luke. You just never bothered to look closely enough to see who she actually was."
Luke narrowed his eyes, his breath coming in heavy, jagged ragged rasps. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means you treated her like an accessory!" Elena snapped, her own frustration finally boiling over. She stepped around the desk, confronting her towering brother without fear. "You spent three years prioritizing your shipments, your legal battles, your mother’s social demands, and your old flame Vanessa! Did you ever once ask Sophia about her architecture projects? Did you ever take her out to dinner just to listen to her talk? You brought her to galas like a trophy and expected her to sit quietly while everyone in Chicago gossiped about whether Vanessa was going to take her place!"
Luke flinched as if struck, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his features before his defensive rage quickly returned. "That has nothing to do with this! Marriage takes work, Elena! She didn't talk to me! She didn't tell me she was unhappy! She just... quit!"
Elena looked at her brother—this powerful, terrifying man who had brought entire corporate syndicates to their knees—and felt a wave of profound pity. He was completely blind to the damage he had caused.
Then, Luke’s eyes flicked downward.
They landed squarely on the red-tagged medical file resting on the corner of Elena's desk.
Sophia Bennett Morgan — Patient ID 40992.
Luke’s posture froze instantly. His eyes locked onto the name printed on the tab.
"Why is Sophia's medical file on your desk?" Luke asked, his voice suddenly dropping into a low, icy whisper that sent a shiver of pure terror straight down Elena's spine.
Elena's blood ran cold. She instinctively took a step toward the desk, covering the file with her hand. "Luke, step back. That is private patient documentation."
"Sophia was here?" Luke asked, stepping closer, his eyes fixed on her hand. "When was she here? Why was she visiting my sister’s medical floor?"
"Luke, I am warning you as a physician," Elena said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts. "You need to leave my office right now. You have no legal right to access medical records in this facility."
Luke reached out, his heavy hand clamping firmly down over Elena's wrist. He didn't hurt her, but his grip was ironclad, unyielding, absolute.
"Elena," Luke whispered, his eyes burning with an intense, desperate light. "Sophia was here yesterday morning before she went to her lawyer. What is wrong with my wife? Is she sick? Is she dying? Tell me!"
Elena stared at her brother, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of the secret pressing down on her chest.
She remembered Sophia's icy warning: Right now, you are my physician. If a single word leaks out, I will file an ethics complaint and sue this hospital.
She remembered the medical oath she had taken to protect patient privacy.
And yet, standing before her was her brother—the man who had protected her, funded her medical education, and kept their family safe from the dangerous shadows of Chicago for over a decade.
"Luke..." Elena whispered, her eyes brimming with tears. "Please... don't do this to me. Don't make me break my oath."
Luke’s grip on her wrist loosened slightly, his face softening into a look of profound, agonizing desperation. "Elena... please. I am losing her. I don't know what happened. I don't know how to fix this. If she is sick... if there is something wrong... you have to tell me."
Elena swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she stood on the precipice of a choice that would tear her life apart.
"She isn't sick, Luke," Elena whispered softly, her voice cracking under the strain.
Luke frowned, his brows pulling together. "Then why was she here?"
Elena looked down at the floor, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "I can't tell you. Legally, ethically... I can't say another word. But if you care about her—if you ever truly loved her—stop fighting her in court. Let her go before you ruin everything."
Luke stared at his sister for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the room was deafening. Slowly, his hand slipped away from her wrist.
He didn't grab the file. He didn't force the issue. But the sharp, terrifying intelligence behind his hazel eyes was already working, analyzing every word, every subtle tear, every nuance of her sudden emotional collapse.
"She isn't sick," Luke repeated softly, processing the words. He looked back at the file, then at Elena's tear-streaked face. "She was here... in the Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine."
Elena gasped, covering her mouth with her hands, but it was already too late.
The realization hit Luke like a physical blow.
He stumbled back half a step, his face draining of all color, his powerful frame suddenly looking fragile, shaken to its very core.
"Sophia is pregnant," Luke whispered, the words hanging in the quiet air like a sudden, explosive shockwave.
Elena didn't answer. She didn't have to. Her silence was the ultimate confirmation.
Luke stood frozen in the center of the office, his chest heaving, his hands trembling violently at his sides as the terrifying truth washed over him. His wife was pregnant with his child. She was nearly five months along. And she had filed for divorce, packed her bags, and attempted to walk away from him forever without ever letting him know he was about to become a father.

"My God..." Luke breathed, a raw, primal agony tearing through his voice.
He turned on his heel and stormed out of the office, his heavy footfalls echoing down the hospital corridor like thunder.
