Chapter 7 - The Battle for Lake Forest

The peace that settled over the Vale estate over the next two weeks was fragile, beautiful, and miraculous.
Noah transformed completely.
He no longer hid under furniture. He spoke in small, clear sentences, his laughter echoing through the tall halls of the mansion as he played with his wooden blocks in the conservatory. He spent hours drawing pictures of trains, houses, and bridges at the small wooden table in the nursery, always insisting that Clara sit beside him to hold his hand.
And Dominic was changing, too.
He began coming home early from his offices in the Loop. He joined Clara and Noah for dinner in the small breakfast nook rather than eating alone in his massive dining room. He sat on the floor of the nursery in his dark suit trousers, letting Noah show him how to build wooden bridges that wouldn't fall down.
Every time Dominic looked at Clara, his eyes burned with an intense, unspoken devotion that made her pulse race and her skin flush warm.
But in Dominic's world, peace was always a brief calm before a storm.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Noah was taking his afternoon nap in the nursery, the mansion's main alarm hummed softly throughout the house.
Clara walked down to the main foyer, finding Marcus and eight heavily armed security guards standing near the entrance, their weapons drawn, their faces tense and pale.
Dominic stood near the front doors, wearing a dark leather coat, strapping a sleek black assault rifle across his chest.
"Dominic?" Clara called out, panic rising in her chest. "What's happening?"
Dominic turned to look at her, his expression instantly shifting into that cold, lethal mask of the Iron Hand.
"The Moretti family," Dominic said flatly. "They realized they've lost their foothold on the docks. Old man Moretti sent four tactical vehicles through our south gate two minutes ago. They are trying to breach the compound."
Clara felt her blood turn to ice. "They're attacking the house?"
"They think they can catch me off guard," Dominic said, stepping toward her, reaching out to grab her shoulders with his large hands. "Listen to me, Clara. Take Noah down to the panic room behind the wine cellar in the basement. Lock the steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus. Do you understand?"
"Dominic, please," Clara cried, her hand clutching his leather coat. "Come with us!"
"I have to clear my grounds, Clara," Dominic said softly, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, protective heat. He leaned down, pressing his lips firmly against hers in a brief, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, gunpowder, and absolute promise. "Protect our boy. I will come back for you."
Before she could speak, Dominic turned and walked out the heavy front doors into the pouring rain, his guards following close behind as gunfire erupted in the distance.
Clara didn't waste another second.
She sprinted upstairs to the nursery, scooped a sleepy Noah into her arms, wrapped his blue blanket around his shoulders, and ran down the back service stairs toward the basement.
The basement of the Vale mansion was a labyrinth of stone archways, wine cellars, and storage rooms.
Clara reached the heavy reinforced steel door of the panic room tucked away behind the wine racks. She punched in the six-digit code Dominic had given her earlier that week.
The heavy hydraulic locks clicked open.
She pulled Noah inside the brightly lit, concrete-reinforced room, which was stocked with medical supplies, water, communication screens, and comfortable sofas.
She pushed the heavy steel door shut, engaging the interior locks with a loud THUD.
Noah clung tightly to her neck, his eyes wide with fear as the muffled sounds of gunfire and explosions echoed through the concrete walls above.
"Clara?" Noah whimpered, his voice shaking violently. "Are the bad people coming?"
Clara sat down on the sofa, pulling the little boy onto her lap, wrapping her arms around him, holding him tight against her beating heart.
"No, sweetheart," Clara whispered firmly, her eyes fixed on the steel door. "Your dad is outside. And nobody gets past your dad."
For forty-five agonizing minutes, Clara sat in the darkness of the reinforced room, listening to the muffled chaos of the battle raging above. She sang soft lullabies to Noah, held his hand, and prayed with every fiber of her being for the survival of the man she had come to love.
Finally, the mechanical locks on the heavy steel door clicked.
The door swung open slowly.
Standing in the doorway was Dominic.
His leather coat was torn at the shoulder, covered in rain, mud, and dark blood splatters that did not belong to him. He held his rifle low, his breathing heavy, his black hair wet against his forehead.
Behind him, Marcus stood in the hallway, offering a quick, exhausted nod to confirm the perimeter was clear.
Dominic dropped his weapon onto the floor, stepping inside the panic room.
"Dominic!" Clara sobbed.
She stood up, running across the concrete floor, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his wet leather coat.
Dominic wrapped his long arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet, holding her against his chest as if she were the only real thing left in a burning world. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, breathing in her scent, his entire body trembling with profound relief.
"They're gone," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "The Moretti family is finished. It's over, Clara. It's finally over."
May you like
Noah ran over, wrapping his small arms around his father's legs.
Dominic dropped down onto his knees, pulling both Clara and Noah into a tight, fierce embrace on the cold concrete floor, holding his family close as the rain continued to pour outside.
