Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Verified

Dominic reached the guest hallway in three strides, his hand instinctively reaching for the firearm inside his shoulder holster before he stopped himself.

Mateo had accidentally knocked over a heavy tall bronze vase near the guest suite entrance. The metal vase had clattered loudly against the hardwood floor, spilling decorative dried branches everywhere.

The boy was standing among the branches, his eyes wide with fear, tears welling up in his gray eyes as he looked at the massive man approaching him.

“I’m sorry!” Mateo sobbed, backing up against the wall. “I was running with the car! I didn't mean to break the house!”

Dominic immediately dropped to his knees, taking the heavy bronze vase and tossing it aside as if it weighed nothing. He reached out and gently took Mateo’s small, shaking hands in his own massive palms.

“Hey,” Dominic said, his voice softer than silk. “Look at me, Matty.”

Mateo sniffled, looking up into Dominic’s pale gray eyes.

“It’s just a vase,” Dominic said, wiping a tear from the boy’s cheek with his thumb. “You didn't break anything that matters. In this house, you are allowed to run. You are allowed to play. Nothing in this room is more valuable than you.”

Mateo blinked, his small chest heaving as he processed the words. “Really? You’re not mad?”

“I could never be mad at you,” Dominic whispered. He pulled the boy into a gentle, firm embrace, tucking Mateo’s head against his shoulder.

Mateo wrapped his small arms around Dominic’s neck, burying his face in the expensive wool of Dominic’s suit jacket.

Standing at the end of the hallway, Elena watched the scene. Her heart, which had been locked behind iron walls for three years, cracked open just a fraction wider. She saw the absolute sincerity in Dominic’s posture—a man who controlled billions of dollars and thousands of men, kneeling in the dirt of a spilled flower vase just to reassure a frightened toddler.

Marco stepped quietly up behind Elena, holding a secure tablet in his hand.

“Mrs. Rivera,” Marco whispered respectfully.

Elena turned. “Yes, Marco?”

“Dr. Sinclair just finalized the results from the rapid genomic sequencing,” Marco said, keeping his voice extremely low so Dominic and the boys couldn't hear. He showed her the digital document on the screen.

At the top of the page were two names: Leo Rivera-Vale and Mateo Rivera-Vale.

Beneath them, in bold green lettering, was the official medical verdict:

PATERNAL MATCH CONFIRMED: 99.999% BIOLOGICAL PROBABILITY.

Elena stared at the screen. Even though she had known the truth in her heart every single day for three years, seeing the official proof typed out beside Dominic’s name made the reality undeniable.

“Dominic didn't lie to you three years ago about the medical report, Mrs. Rivera,” Marco said softly, his rough voice carrying a rare warmth. “I was the one who picked up the original documents from Marrowstone Medical. I saw him sit at his desk for six hours without moving, holding those papers, staring at a picture of you. He loved you enough to destroy himself so you could have a life.”

Elena looked back down the hallway. Dominic was now sitting on the floor with both Mateo and Leo, showing them how to assemble a complex wooden train track that Marco had brought up from the storage room.

“He destroyed us both,” Elena whispered to Marco. “Because he thought he knew better than love.”

“Then teach him he was wrong,” Marco replied simply, before bowing his head and stepping back toward the elevator.
