Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece of Truth

Evelyn climbed down the wooden ladder slowly, her rubber-soled boots clicking softly against the floorboards.

She stood twenty feet away from him near the altar rails, wearing her worn canvas apron, her hands dusted with dried white plaster.

She looked at him closely. She saw the dark circles under his hollow eyes, the weight he had lost over the past month, and the total absence of the arrogant, terrifying billionaire who had once dominated Chicago.

“You shouldn't have come here, Adrian,” she said quietly, her voice entirely calm.

“I had to,” Adrian choked out, taking three slow, hesitant steps forward, stopping when she raised a gentle hand to halt him.

“Why?” she asked softly. “The three-year contract was terminated. My father’s debt is clear. Your riverfront project is safe. You have your empire back, Adrian.”

Adrian looked at her, his hands trembling violently at his sides.

“I don't have an empire, Evelyn,” he whispered, his voice cracking entirely. “I have a pile of cold rocks and broken glass. I have nothing.”

Evelyn lowered her hand slowly, watching his face.

Adrian took a deep, shuddering breath, dropping to his knees right there on the hard wooden floor of the chapel, looking up at her with complete, unadulterated surrender.

“I lied to you,” Adrian wept quietly, the great predator stripped entirely bare before the only woman he had ever loved. “I lied because I was terrified. I was terrified that if I admitted how completely, totally dependent I was on your love, you would see how small and broken I really was beneath the money. I said those vile words to hurt you before you could leave me.”

He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out her platinum wedding ring and holding it out in his shaking palm.

“You are not a prop, Evelyn,” he choked out, tears finally streaming down his face. “You were never a deal. You are the only beautiful, true thing that has ever happened to my miserable life. If you want me to give up Vale Development, I will sell every tower tomorrow. If you want me to live in this town and sweep the floors of this chapel for the rest of my life, I will do it happily. Just... please don't leave me in the dark.”

Evelyn stared down at the powerful man kneeling before her on the dusty floorboards.

She saw no armor. She saw no billionaire chairman. She saw only the South Side boy who was terrified of being abandoned, laying his entire heart at her feet without a single legal clause or corporate defense.

She walked forward slowly, stopping right in front of him.

She reached down, placing her small, warm hands on his face, lifting his head up until his dark, tear-filled eyes met hers.

“You’re an idiot, Adrian Vale,” she whispered softly, a small, tearful smile breaking across her face.

Adrian pulled his head forward, burying his face against her waist, wrapping his arms tightly around her hips, weeping quietly against her canvas apron as if he were a drowning man who had finally found land.

Evelyn ran her fingers through his dark hair, holding him tightly against her chest.

“Get up, Adrian,” she murmured gently. “You don't have to kneel to me.”

Adrian stood up slowly, keeping his arms locked around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He reached down, picking up her left hand, and gently slid the diamond ring back onto her finger where it belonged.

“Come home with me?” he whispered, his eyes filled with endless devotion. “Not to a fortress. We’ll sell the Lake Shore house. We’ll build a real home by the river.”

Evelyn looked up into his eyes, reaching up to brush a tear from his cheek.

“Only on one condition, Mr. Vale,” she said softly.

“Anything,” he promised instantly. “Name it.”

“You let me restore you,” she whispered, leaning up on her toes to press her lips against his.

Adrian kissed her back with a soft, reverent warmth that swept away every shadow of their past, wrapping his heavy arms around her as the autumn sunlight flooded through the stained-glass windows, painting the quiet chapel in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and enduring light.
