Chapter 5 - THE BLOODLINE

The room spun on its axis.
The quiet hum of the rain outside seemed to turn into a deafening roar in my ears. My knees buckled, and I stumbled backward against the wooden edge of the wardrobe.
Luca caught me instantly, his powerful arm wrapping around my waist, pulling me firm against his chest to keep me from falling.
"Clara..." I breathed, tears instantly blinding my vision. "Clara was... Leo's mother?"
"Yes," Luca said softly, holding me close as my body began to shake with silent, overwhelming sobs.
Ten years ago, my older sister Clara—who was seven years older than me—had vanished from our South Philly neighborhood without a trace. The police had listed her as a runaway, claiming she had left voluntarily with an older boyfriend. My mother had spent the rest of her life searching for her, eventually dying of broken heart and cancer six years later, leaving me entirely alone in the world.
"Why didn't she come back?" I sobbed, clutching the fabric of Luca's shirt. "Why didn't she find me?!"
"She was trying to protect you, Avery," Luca whispered, his hand gently stroking my dark hair as he held me tight. "When Clara took the surrogacy contract in California, she didn't know who I was. My legal team used front corporations to handle the arrangement. But when she realized she was carrying a child for the Moretti family, she knew that anyone connected to her would become a target for my enemies."
He reached down, his fingers cupping my chin, gently lifting my face so I was forced to look into his dark gray eyes.
"Six weeks ago, when Clara was mortally wounded in that warehouse," Luca continued, his voice thick with raw emotion, "she held my son in her arms under a workbench while the bullets flew. When my men breached the building, she was dying. She pulled this silver pendant from her neck, pressed it into Gabe's hand, and whispered her last words."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks. "What did she say?"
"'Give it to my sister, Avery. She is the only one who can protect my boy.'"
A violent sob escaped my throat.
Everything made sense now. The way Leo had lunged toward me at the restaurant. The way he had reached for the silver necklace—the identical necklace my mother had ordered custom-made for both of her daughters before she died. The way Leo's small body had relaxed against my chest the moment he smelled my skin, recognizing the bloodline of the woman who had sacrificed her life to save him.
I wasn't just a random server who happened to have a gentle touch with children.
I was Leo's aunt. I was his mother's sister. I was his last living blood relative.
"I searched for you for three weeks after Clara died," Luca murmured, his thumb gently wiping away the tears streaming down my face. "My men scoured every registry in Pennsylvania until we found your employment record at Aurelia. I brought Leo to your table that night hoping... praying to God that the blood bond was real."
I looked up into Luca's face. The terrifying, ruthless mafia boss was gone. Standing before me was a man carrying an unbearable weight of grief, guilt, and fierce, protective love for his child.

"You knew who I was the entire time," I whispered.
"I knew," Luca acknowledged, his breath warm against my lips. "I brought you into my home to keep you safe, Avery. Because the men who killed your sister... are still looking for Clara's legacy."
