Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Estate

The heavy oak doors of the grand foyer rattled as high-caliber rounds slammed into the exterior estate walls. Outside, the rain had turned into a downpour, flashing with the muzzle light of approaching rival enforcers. Alarm sirens blared through the halls, casting a dark red strobe across the marble floors Norah had spent weeks scrubbing.

Enzo was already directing six heavily armed Rossi guards toward the main entrance, but the gunfire was heaviest near the east conservatory.

"They aren't trying to breach the front," Norah said, pointing toward a detailed architectural blueprint laid out across the dining table. "The front doors are reinforced steel. But the old conservatory on the east wing has single-pane glass disguised behind iron lattice. If they blow the lattice, they can bypass your perimeter guards entirely and head straight for the upper floor."

Vincent took a quick glance at the blueprint, then at Enzo. "She’s right. Marco knows the history of this building. Enzo, take four men and lock down the east corridor. Secure the high ground."

"What about you, boss?" Enzo asked, racking the bolt of his rifle.

"I’m going to the security monitoring hub in the kitchen basement," Vincent commanded. "I want eyes on every inch of the perimeter."

Norah led Vincent down the narrow service staircase that led directly from the butler's pantry into the lower kitchen levels. She knew every squeaking floorboard, every hidden access hatch, and every blind spot in the estate's floor plan.

As they reached the heavy metallic door of the lower kitchen hub, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the floor above. The breach at the conservatory had begun.

"Stay behind me," Vincent ordered smoothly, raising his pistol as they stepped into the control room.

The room was filled with wall-to-wall monitors displaying live security feeds from every corner of the estate grounds. On the main screen, several armed men in tactical gear were flooding through the shattered glass of the east wing, firing silenced weapons at the estate's defense personnel.

Norah stepped up to the central console, her fingers moving rapidly across the touchscreen controls. During her night shifts, she had often watched the security guards operate the interface while she wiped down the control desks.

"I can isolate the east wing," Norah said, tapping three consecutive command prompts. "The mansion has fire isolation doors built into the arches. If I drop them now, we trap Russo's lead breach team in the hallway between the conservatory and the gallery."

Vincent watched as heavy steel fire shutters suddenly slammed down on the live video feeds, completely sealing off six of Russo’s hitmen in a narrow, windowless corridor with no retreat.

"You're a natural at this, Miss Bennett," Vincent said, genuine admiration in his voice.

"I just pay attention," Norah replied, her eyes fixed on the monitors.

Suddenly, a red warning light flashed on the lower left monitor. The feed showed two men in rain slickers bypassing the fire doors by using the old underground coal chutes—a pathway that led straight into the main kitchen pantry.

"They're coming up through the floor right above us," Norah warned, pointing at the screen. "They're targeting the kitchen."

Vincent checked the chamber of his sidearm. "They want to destroy the one place that kept me alive. They think if they burn the kitchen, they eliminate you and my morale in one stroke."

"Not while I’m breathing," Norah said coldly.

She reached beneath the central control console and pulled out a heavy brass master key that opened the secondary storage lockers. Inside sat two high-intensity tactical flare launchers used for maritime signaling along the estate’s private dock.

She handed one to Vincent and kept the second for herself. "The coal chute exits directly into the dry spice pantry. It’s filled with fine grain dust and dried flour from last week's inventory."

Vincent’s eyes lit up as he instantly grasped her strategy. "A flour dust explosion."

"Precisely," Norah said. "If they breach that door with weapons free, one flare will ignite the suspended dust in the air. It’ll blow the chute backwards."

"Let’s go," Vincent said.

Moving quickly and silently, they ascended the metal spiral staircase back up into the main commercial kitchen. The room was dark, lit only by the red emergency lights reflecting off the stainless-steel appliances.

The floor of the walk-in pantry creaked violently. Heavy boots kicked against the wooden trapdoor of the old coal chute.

Norah and Vincent took positions on opposite sides of the central prep island. Norah raised her flare launcher, aiming steadily at the base of the pantry door.

The trapdoor burst open. Two of Russo’s top hitmen pulled themselves up into the room, their submachine guns raised, searching the darkness.

"Where is the girl?" one of the hitmen growled, his voice thick with aggression. "Russo wants her alive! Kill the guards, but bring her!"

Vincent stepped out from behind the steel column, his pistol aimed straight at the leader's chest. "Looking for my cook?"

The hitman spun his weapon toward Vincent, but before he could pull the trigger, Norah fired her tactical flare directly into the center of the pantry.

The bright magnesium flare struck the floor, instantly igniting the fine particle flour dust floating in the air from the overturned sacks. A violent, concussive flash-bang exploded inside the confined pantry space. The shockwave threw both hitmen backward down the coal chute, their weapons clattering uselessly across the metal floor as heavy flames consumed the small access tunnel, completely sealing off the breach point.

The thick iron fire door automatically slammed shut over the pantry entrance, containing the flash fire completely.

Vincent immediately stepped over to Norah, checking her face and arms for injuries. "Are you hit?"

"I’m fine," Norah panted, her face lightly dusted with soot, her grip on the flare launcher still firm. "The pantry is sealed. The chute is destroyed."

Vincent stared at her in the dim red emergency light. Her courage was absolute, her focus unwavering under fire. Slowly, he reached out, his hand gently brushing a trace of soot from her cheek.

"You're unbelievable," Vincent whispered, his voice deep and filled with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in years.

Norah looked up at him, feeling the heat of his hand against her skin. The danger around them seemed to fade into background noise for a brief second.

Before either of them could speak, the emergency comms radio on Vincent’s belt clicked to life.

"Boss!" Enzo’s voice called out over the static. "The east wing is secure! We trapped their main assault team behind the fire shutters. Russo's remaining men are falling back to their vehicles!"

Vincent pressed the radio button, his eyes never leaving Norah’s face. "Pursue them to the gates. Capture their squad leader alive. I want Marco Russo's exact coordinates by midnight."

"Copy that, boss," Enzo replied.

Vincent clicked off the radio and turned back to Norah, his thumb lingering lightly near her jawline before he slowly lowered his hand.

"The siege is over," Vincent said quietly. "You saved this house tonight, Norah."

"We saved it together," Norah corrected gently, stepping back slightly to catch her breath.

Vincent looked around at his kitchen—dusted with flour, lit by red emergency signals, yet standing firm.

"Russo made a terrible mistake tonight," Vincent said, his voice turning to cold iron. "He thought he was attacking a dying king and a helpless cleaner. Tomorrow, we show him what happens when he tries to burn down our home."
